A pher just spent a LOT of money restoring a W124 from shed to masterpiece.

Do whatever makes you happy as long as it doesn't cost so much as to detract from happiness elsewhere. So don't sell a kidney to fund it...

I bought a dirt cheap Citroen Xsara to bash about in for a few months, fitted a towbar to carry a bike rack and ended up using/abusing the poor thing for a couple of years. Was such an amazing car purely because I didn't give a crap about it. So liberating. Trusty thing never let me down.

Then the head gasket went. I would have fixed it but I knew it would also need a new cat and new tyres for the next MOT and the air con didn't work. So with genuine sadness I let the scrap man take it away.

I've got exactly the same problem.

I bought a 1996 Primera SRi for £400 last year, and I like it so much I want to fix the things that are wrong, but I know that this isn't what I should do. The engine is great, it's quickish and economical, and the car handles well (I think it's the same as the GT with 20bhp less).

A bit of a suspension refresh and some welding of the sills and it would pass its MOT in September and be even better, but should I get rid?
Had a black 1996 model years ago.
It was our first sensible car after our eldest was born.
Great car and never let us down.
Got written off in a icy car park when someone slid the whole length of it into the back.
Such a shame and can imagine they are good shed material now.

Is that like "smashing the back doors in"?

When you run a shed and you reach the point where you can replace the car for less than the cost of the cam belt service, why bother?
Just take the gamble.

They are brilliant. The sill is rusty but I've just had a quote of £40 to fix it.

Having said that, is there a car with a lower-rent image than a 1990s Nissan Primera?

I've had a few suspension bits replaced, but it's going to be due a timing belt in the next year or so, plus I'd like to replace the engine and transmission mounts and get some crappy paint sorted.
Being a '96 one is it VVTi? The earlier ones are non-interference aren't they? If they are you could chance your luck and see what happens when the belt goes.

Total cost for this is looking at about £1k and the head says that I should start looking for something new. However, it's such an utterly relaxing place to be, even in the worst of traffic, that I'm seriously considering stumping up more than it's worth to keep it running and make it look nice.

Anyone else have a similar dilemma?
Sounds like Garlick's LS400 thread. smile

It's not a VVTi, unfortunately only the MK1 and MK2 are non-interference and mine's a MK3 so I don't really fancy having a valves meet pistons moment!

I should have bought his when I saw it in the classifieds last year hehe

Thanks for the correction on the VVTi. I didn't know if the LS400 of that age was non-interference. I could have been getting confused with the GS300. The early ones of those are non-interference I think, with the Merc. light bug eyed Facelift going VVTi.

I was angling for his white 944S2, but even slight rust bubbling gates and the cambelt interval isn't that long either. I decided to treat myself to a Mars Bar instead.
