Hi,

I was driving our Qashqai (1.5 Diesel) home from a weekend away and I notice what I thought was clutch slip on the motorway.

Everytime I accelerated the revs would instantly jump up from 2000 to around 3500 and slowly decrease to what it should be.

3 hours after journey's end and took the car out again and it was fine.

It is fine again today, I have tried WOT in high gears up hills and it is fine (revs build gradually in line with acceleration). Pulling away briskly in 1st and 2nd is also fine.

So why would clutch slip disappear? What else could it be?

Thanks.

Had this on a diesel Passat, it was the intial symptons of the Dual Mass Flywheel failing and actually took about a year to fully fail.

Sometimes with the NOS kicking in, but I back off when I get a Manifold Failure warning.

Interesting point, these make a noise when they aren't happy don't they?

I thought the engine sounded extra dieselly when under load before this starting happening.

No idea whether you have a DMF or anything else that can fail, however if you cooked the clutch for some reason, but it's not worn, it generally will "come back" when it cools down and the cooked layer gets worn off.

Eliminating any odd possibles like a temporary leak of oil on the clutch plate.

But once contaminated wouldn't it just judder/slip from then on. When the crank seal started weeping in the Caterham it knackered the clutch even though it was barely worn frown

When the clutch on my 306 diesel was on it's way out it would go through phases of being seemingly fine and holding well before slipping again...

I was going to post a very similar thread. Driving back from Silverstone on Sunday evening back up to Manchester and went to overtake in 6th and got what I assumed was the clutch slipping, although quite slowly. 2krpm to about 2300rpm and gently back again.

Took the car out the next day and nothing of the sort for a 40 minute drive to my Dads, however on the way back it did it once when I tried to force it, again at 2krpm to 2300 and back again.

Nothing abrupt or sharp about it, I've driven a C5 with a knackered clutch and at 2krpm it would shoot round to the redline almost until you back off the accelerator.

Mine also drives fine in the lower gears and will only "slip" in 6th every now and then. It's puzzled me as it did this 6months ago when the turbo was failing and overboosting and then it stopped doing it. I'm kind of hoping that its just glazing on the clutch or similar, but if it fails it fails I guess.

Spooky. Same thing on my Freelander recently when in 6th. Yet on the drive at home, handbrake on, 2nd or 3rd gear, no slip at all.

You have to be careful with that, if you're not careful you could blow the welds on the intake wink

I have the same in my 2.0 TDCI C-MAX

I bought it in 2009 with 10k on the clock. After having it for 6 months we noticed that when driving at 40MPH and in 4th Gear if you put your foot down as soon as the Turbo came on the Revs would rise then full again.

After a while we had it checked out by Ford as it was still under manufacturers warranty and they could not replicate it after having it for a week.

So I took it home and surprise surprise it happened as soon as I got it into a 50 zone. Took it back to them and the Service manager came out with me. It did it while I was with him, it was like an automatic was changing gear but I was in 4th, 5th or 6th at the time.

Anyway, that was a waste of time as they could not find the fault.

Fast Forward to 2014, still go the car and it is now coming up to 60k. Still have the same issue but it seems to come and go.

Going to live with it until what ever is causing it finally lets go, its going to be an expensive fix either way.

My brother had almost identical symptoms in his diesel qashqai. Turned out it was the slave cylinder failing, clutch slip as you describe which disappeared for a week or so, then a strange noise when the clutch was pressed followed by loss of pedal pressure.
The garage who replaced it said they had quite a few fail.

I've had this before. Was the crank seal leaking onto the fly/clutch and therefore would make it slip occasionally.
The obvious sign was loss of oil but couldn't see it dripping anywhere on the floor.

When I took the ST220 on track I got clutch slip after about 15 laps. Let it cool down and now it's fine. Did you do anything to get it really hot?

It was during a 103 mile trip, half of that on a hilly Welsh A road overtaking the odd caravan.

It was on this road I noticed extra noise, it sounded like the normal Diesel Knock, but louder.

Once on the motorway it starting slipping.
