I had an MG Montego when I was 19, C278 RDP was the reg, shows as last taxed around 1997.
I enjoyed mine very much, it was a blast in the wet! I do remember the tyres were eye wateringly expensive being a continental rim size and I think you were limited to Michelin tyres only?
Mine was the same colour as the blue one above, Moonraker blue?

All later MG Montegos had the X-spoke 6.5J x 15 inch alloys (Maestro Turbo had 6J) and tyres became much easier and cheaper to purchase. I enjoyed mine very much, it was a blast in the wet! Then later it was realised that MGF wheels fitted so it was a no brainer. F 6 spokes fitted a treat.

Had an ('86) 2.0EFi MG Maestro from '89 to '93 and did 100k miles in it - great / underrated car but as previously mentioned, rust killed it.
The 152bhp of this was soon blown away by the advent of the 16 valve engines, albeit with the power at the other end of the rev counter.
The 2.0EFi motor had 115bhp, the Turbo had 152bhp Which iirc was more than the 16v competition at the time, the other benefit of the turbo The 152bhp of this was soon blown away by the advent of the 16 valve engines, albeit with the power at the other end of the rev counter.
model was because it was so simple it was very easy to extract 35-50bhp more by the simple change of a carb needle, a simple mod to the waste gate actuator and banding the intercooler to stop it blowing the ends off it.
I found this all out when we bought an ex factory press demonstrator car from an Austin Rover closed auction at BCa Brighouse, I had a real soft spot for the MG Maestro, so much so for three years I had a brand new one every three months as my company demo car, very very underated cars, with a set os springs to lower it about 15-20mm it was brilliant...
I'd love a Turbo again....
Ohhh, MG variants of Austin Rovers....I remember the Buy British campaign! In its day the Montego turbo was only eclipsed in the range by the SD1 Vitesse & then the Tomcat Turbo coupe & Tickford Maestro Turbo - & then the daddy of the range came along, the 6R4 which when they were desperate to sell them could be acquired for less than £20k.... Great childhood memories
The turbo's were great cars.
Practical and fast in their day.
I drove them daily from 88-92 as an ARG (later Rover Group) mechanic.
My Dad was a Ford man so there was always a Cortina or Sierra on the drive to compare them to.
Yes there were quality issues, but even all it's main rivals are absent from the roads today
(Cavalier SRi, Sierra XR4) having long since died a death.
The Maestro / Montego were great models sold short only on long term investment which would
Have improved them massively.
They still had great engines, excellent cabin space, a 7 seat option and performance models
In which you could see where your extra dough had gone.
The Maestro Turbo was a cracking car also, dipping into the high 6's to 60.
Happy memories of my youth !

I loved the Chomley Warner presenter and cheapo synth music. Really took me back to my days as a salesman in the mid 80s watching a VHS cassette in some stuffy training room with a flip chart and plain biccies.
Wonderful. I had a Montego hire car for a week and recall a very rubbery gear shift.

The only problem I had with mine was I blew the diff apart, the pin in the middle wore, causing loads of shunt, I hammered out of a junction and it went bang, no drive and I coasted the rest of the way home, leaving a trail of cogs and gearbox oil, so god knows what the Turbo did to the gearbox, ironically a VW unit.
Found another and myself and a mate fitted it, well, mainly him, in the snow, at night, he wasn't very well after that, sorry Dave !

The VW box was only used on the smaller engined stuff. The 2 litre and turbo both used the Honda derived PG1 gearbox which was much tougher and had a nice clean shift feel. My dad had a mg maestro turbo back in 1989 as a company car. I was six at the time and it seemed like a rocket ship and looked as cool as anything. He also had 3 mg metros too which were fun little rot boxes.
If I had more time and money I would love a mg turbo of some sort, any one of the three would be just fine.

Never had the MG Montego but did have a MG Metro Turbo back in the early 90's when I was 19. Still remember driving down the main road back from the dealers and putting my foot down and laughing out loud like a lunatic as it took off like a little rocket.
Then came the blown head gasket, the engine mounts that failed, the gearbox that smashed itself apart, the running on when switching off the engine and many other little electrical gremlins.
Used to park it in the city centre in Hull and suspected someone had been attempting to nick it (locks damaged), so i started taking out the fuel pump relay and still remember coming back to it after a day at work to find it gone but knowing that the scroats wouldn't have got far before it ran out of petrol. Lo and behold there it was at the other side of the car park - tts had abandoned it but nicked my parcel shelf.
Traded it in for a new Fiat Uno shortly after - the fact that this was like luxury tells you all you need to know.
