We have one fitted to our 18yo's Panda because we saved £300+ with Direct Line. The boy is fine about it and so am I because, apart from the money saving, it encourages him to drive safely in a way he probably would not normally be inclined to. Have to admit that I possibly over-egged the omelette when I mentioned the dire consequences for his future premiums if he speeds.

I'm 20 years old and have had a black box for the past three years. The first year was fine but now can't wait to go onto a normal insurance policy this summer

I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. My first year is about to come to an end, paying £1900 back in May 2013 for a 1.3 KA, I've now got quotes for around £700 for the same KA with 1NCB, all of which are non-black box and are even cheaper than the black box policies that are on the same comparison website.

It really depends. They come in a few different 'flavours'. Some, as mentioned above, will track driving habit, style, driving times and change the premiums accordingly. Others, such as the one offered by ourselves, track mileage exclusively. Not saying that either are right/wrong, just depends on what is comfortable with the owner/driver, I suppose. If you'd like any help, feel free to drop me a message.

Thanks,

Ash

I'd not touch one myself..

They mark you on acceleration/braking, so you'll get punished for doing an emergency stop to prevent killing a child, same for avoiding a fox in the road... too black and white.

REALLY?
I thought they were based on an average not one event.

So it just monitors how many miles you do a year?
How many did you declare?

It does monitor how i drive, but it only effects my renewal quote. I am on a 6,000 mile policy with extra miles if i drive well with tesco ins.
