What car are you trying to rent?

I have just done a quote through Hertz for a week in August, pick up JFK and drop off at MIA the pre-pay online price for a Ford Focus or similar is £502!
I am geing a similar price. About $800 for a full size car, Focus is not much cheaper.

Actually picking up in Newark.

Looks like Hertz with a discount code is the way forward...

I'm in the US this August with family and looking to rent an SUV in LA and will be driving to Las Vegas and then on to Arizona then back to LA over a 2 week period. Will it be cheaper if my US relative rents it with local discount (AAA) and has me as a named driver? Has anyone done this?

Are you able to pick up in a Hertz city location as opposed to JFK?

Wherever I try once I add taxes and surcharges it soon jumps up.

Struggling to find valid discount codes with Hertz. Anyone able to help?

Other idea is hire a Mustang. That would be cool!

I am part of the Hertz Presidents club, let me know the start date, end date and car type and I can tell you what you should be aiming for as a decent corporate rate. Ring them up with this as a benchmark and request a deal saying you got this from another provider, they do negotiate for business.

Rental cars really don't want you to take cars one-way this distance which is why they are hitting you with one-way fees to discourage you from doing so.

When I did this exact route I one-way'd from New York to Washington DC and took Amtrak down to Jacksonville where I one-way'd to Miami at no extra cost for the one way element.

Also, renting from JFK seems very expensive, Boston is often hundreds of dollars cheaper. Plus you'd get to see Boston, too.

My first tip would be to shop around, when I was looking at doing route 66 the one way fee ranged from $800 to $250 , I cant remember which was cheapest, try an expedia search to find the cheapest, its listed in the details. QAll companies tend to charge these fees, the only exceptions I can think of are Florida ( you can pick up anf return anywhere in state without charge) and Nevada/arizona/california also have this ( you can pick up and return at any location in the 3 states without charge) this is why when renting in vegas you can get a california plated car.

Get it nicked from your final city destination?
That^. Work out the insurance excess/cost vs the $800. Move it round the corner from your hotel, report stolen.

OP, Just drive it back to New York when you get to Miami.
1300 miles, it'll cost only £100 in fuel and take a day if 2 of you do it in shifts.
