Has this ruined the game for the folk trying to hide such things? I noticed for the first time tonight, it now shows Cat D and so on underneath the main title of ads for cars on the insurance write off database.

Funny how some of the ads make no mention at all of the cars ever being written off. I don't think these sellers have noticed yet..... biggrin

Anyway, good on AT for adding some much needed transparency to things.

That is excellent news. With so much history old MOTS etc available OTW Autotrader ought to be leading the field with all the information there ready to access. Perhaps now they will.

Its rumbled a few people trying to pass of cat C's as cat D's. I wonder which model has the most write-offs

I've always noticed that. Considering 99% of people think a cat D car is fine but wouldn't touch a cat C it kinda makes sense I suppose.

I noticed a lot of cheap E46 330i's were on the hit list last night.

One of them even had a seller pleading (in barely legible fashion) with people to go and see it because it was so great and fast etc. but no mention whatsoever of the write off.

As a resident of Leeds, the West Yorkshire thing really annoys me as I worry that if I don't take extra care to specify that I am in Leeds and not elsewhere in West Yorks, people may be put off when I have a car for sale.

Doesn't show up on the auto trader app as far as I can see.

The bigger problem might actually be that punters have no idea what a category c or d actually means

I don't think they do. Most people would actively avoid both.

This, overall a good move but the fact that Cat C/D or just not registered is based on the cost of repair vs. vehicle value might be a problem. If C or D was based on damage then it would be more sensible for prospective used car purchases.

Hover over the cat c or d logo and it tells you.

Anyway, been looking at a cheap jag and that now shows as cat c.

Not that i'm bothered anyway.

Shows up on the mobile version of the website.

None of the adverts stated they were cat C or D... One on a cat C even said in the first sentence that it was a good safe car to drive!

The first one I saw actually did, so I looked at a few more to see if that was some AT insert or if the seller had chose to write it. Turns out that was the only honest seller of the lot!

Kudos to AutoTrader for including this. I guess it's possible a lot of sellers simply don't know, but plenty must know and are just hiding it from those who don't bother with the checks..
