I noticed a lot of cheap E46 330i's were on the hit list last night.
One of them even had a seller pleading (in barely legible fashion) with people to go and see it because it was so great and fast etc. but no mention whatsoever of the write off.
As a resident of Leeds, the West Yorkshire thing really annoys me as I worry that if I don't take extra care to specify that I am in Leeds and not elsewhere in West Yorks, people may be put off when I have a car for sale.
rightly or wrongly there is a lot of bad press about sellers in that areaOne of them even had a seller pleading (in barely legible fashion) with people to go and see it because it was so great and fast etc. but no mention whatsoever of the write off.

Absolutely. Past experience means I myself won't buy a car from a seller in Bradford, Batley, Bingley, Keighley, Dewsbury etc. Dodgy sellers do unfortunately seem to be rife in these areas.
Made the mistake of looking at cars that way a few times - never been worth it.

Its good that they are now highlighting this however for me its purely an excuse to get the car cheaper. As long as the work is carried out properly that's all that matters!
That's not entirely the whole whole story though.A cat c/d will impact your insurance premium and the resale value of the car.
While there might be some cars that have been repaired well and perhaps don't deserve the tags there are some horrificly repaired cars that need the tags.
I don't know where they get their information from, however 2 issues strike me as potential problems:
1. What if their system incorrectly flags a car as cat d/c - for example some times with HPI checks it'll come up as a warning on a car with a different number plate and you have to have a look at the dates of the plate changes and the write off etc to ensure you know which vehicle was damages
2. What happens if you buy a car advertised as a non cat d/c car and it turns out it is
I think this is a bad development as it further discourages buyers from doing their job properly and carrying out a proper HPI check on the vehicle. We've all seen the problems people get into with mytextcheck or whatever it is - this'll just be as bad - "I didn't bother with a HPI check because AutoTrader didn't say it was a CAT D so why bother" etc etc etc.

Bit of a double edged sword this really imo.
On the one hand I think it's a great addition since generally speaking that's what people normally do HPI checks for, so it saves potential purchasers money.
On the other hand - it gives an illusion of safety that might mean people don't bother to do HPI checks at all (and thus not find out about outstanding finance or other things that AT doesn't tell you). Also, as has been said already, the lack of a marker doesn't necessarily mean the car has never had an accident. Suddenly seeing "no marker" and "marker" infers greater security that isn't really there.
All in all though I think it's a good change - more information is always useful. If nothing else it does tell you something if the seller has willingly omitted this information from their description.

I'd imagine it will say somewhere about you doing your own checks and not relying on information on the screen blah blah blah. If someone relies solely on that information, then they're an idiot and get what they deserve. I think it's a great idea.1. It does make for an interesting lunchtime though.. who can find the most expensive undeclared writeoff?

A "fine example" indeed

That's a jolly good upgrade, it would be prudent for all cars on AT and other paid for advertising arenas to perform an HPI check prior to listing.
I for one am not that put off by Cat C/D if there is evidence of the damage and repair work available.
Ditto there is a world of badly repaired ste out and about worst are often nearly new stuff that had fairly heavy damage,I for one am not that put off by Cat C/D if there is evidence of the damage and repair work available.
Best buys are often older cars that got written of with minor panel damage, however most salvage seems to make mega money so how people can do a good job and make a proffit is a mystery !!!!!????
