I can't remember the exact details of the law change, but it's easily verifiable.
I haven't put an advert on Autotrader for over 10 years, but would the Cat marker be registration-dependant? So if the previously-damaged car was showing a private plate at the time of the accident, are Autotrader basing the Cat status on the reg only and possibly not the actual car/VIN?
So, as I predicted earlier in this thread, this is a total waste of time!
I've been looking around at something to add to the fleet and looked at a rather nice looking car. Reasonably priced. Did not list as CAT-D/C on the Autotrader but in fact if you HPI the thing is coming back as listed on the VCAR.
It doesn't matter to me at all now as the car is sold - some poor fker has probably bought it thinking now Autotrader has this thing highlighting whether it's a CAT D/C they're safe and don't need to HPI the car.

Depends how long the ad has been live, if it's a trade ad that was listed before the new CAT C/D markers came in then they may not show. You can always use the 'Report Ad' button and from experience they do remove ads fairly quickly.
It wasn't listed back in April - the chap only had the car in stock a week or so.I've never found Autotrader actually remove an ad that's reported (same for PH)...unless the ad gets recreated as a new ad shortly after being taken down.

I agree. What kind of scumbag dealer would list the mileage as "1" .. when they bloody well know how many miles it has done?! It would be great if Autotrader blocked mileages that were significantly below the average, UNLESS the advertiser can substantiate the mileage (cloud cuckoo land )The Moose said:

It's a useful tool for filtering those cars out. You should still always check before buying any car, unless you're not bothered. I'm sure unscrupulous dealers are now entering the reg of a similar car to hide the history. If this is found to be the case, these traders should be banned from AT.
Okay so I've got a different scenario. A car I'm interested in is showing on A/T listing as a CAT C. I have run an independent HPI report via mycarccheck and it comes back all clear. The buyer is unaware of any total loss and does not know why the A/T listing is such.
Does that mean it's okay and A/T have picked up a false marker or should I still be concerned. I should add it is a very limited market, there are only 7 for sale in the UK.
Grateful if there is another way of checking!?

If I was spending more than a couple of grand and was genuinely worried then I'd get a proper HPI check with the HPI guarantee I think. That would provide me enough peace of mind. It's also worth noting that trying to get HPI to pay out on their guarantee is, I bet, about as hard as getting blood out of a stone. I've never done it, but I'd imagine that there are so many get-outs it's not worth the paper it's written on... ( Cue everyone telling me HPI have paid them out on this issue ).
