Yes I'd noticed R8s doing an Autotrader search.

Not sure if they are quite me. I'll check out the Mercs too

If your considering a Merc CL it's got to be the CL63 smile

?... not a bomb to run like the db9 or GT, or maybe the Aston V8.
Says the man who's never had to run any of them. Running costs for a DB9 are on a par with any other premium brand, £800- £1k a year for servicing costs plus tyres at £200 a corner depending on mileage. My Discovery has proved much more of a liability than my DB9 did. Fuel economy much better than a CL63. Whilst there is still some depreciation to consider it won't be anywhere near as eye-watering as a new car in this price range.

DB9 for sure. 100% go for it. Buy from an AM dealer for a bit of peace of mind and enjoy.

Not one person commenting here about big bills/maintenance has actually owned one so take the comments with a big pinch of salt.

Might be worth posting in the AM forum for some more specific responses.
From one whose run three, I can say that they have been more reliable than my daily ride. Services are about £800 a year, dealer warranties are superb and so has been their service. My last VAG car cost more in one year in fixes than all three have cost me so far.
They give me an extraordinary amount of pleasure and no worries.

If you are moving outside of a DB9 or Bentley, this has got to be worth consideration, manufacturers warranty and the service plan on mine costs me £36/month.

Try a BMW M6 with the V10 engine. At full chat it makes the other two look weak.

Also for the same money you can have a hardly used 640d coupe. Wait another 12 months and you can probably get into the new shape M6.

They seem to break quite often though.

£40k buys you a lot of XKR. Possibly better than the DB9 in some ways but nowhere near as special. I was a bit confused with the Bentley I drove. Too big and heavy to be a sports car and too firm/noisy to be a cruiser. Not sure what it's supposed to be. Lovely interior though.

If you want to understand the Gaydon era Aston range in detail then buy the book

http://www.astonmartinreview.co.uk/

and the discussion is here

http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f...

You will then have a grasp of what the model year changes were and maybe more of an idea of what age of car you want.

Plenty of food for thought here. Cheers.

I have to say a nearly new XKR does appeal.

I'll bookmark this thread.

Thanks again.

A purchase like this isn't usually one about practicalities. It's for the heart not the head.
When you open the garage, which one will make you smile?

I was looking at exactly the same 2 cars a month ago and ended up with a V8 vantage , put a bigger smile on my face but did extensive research , the Bentleys can often go wrong with huge bills and the mpg is often below 10 ! The DB9s a bit better and the Gaydon cars are pretty reliable , look amazing and sound fantastic servicing is around £800 but the early cars have been in the low thirties for a while now so depreciation is minimal a 3 year old XKR is also a good car but will still be losing £5k+ a year ! And a Aston Martin just feels a lot more special than a Jag :-)

I saw a Bentley being worked on at our local VAG indie when my Audi was being serviced. Asked the garage owner if he was branching out and he explained that it was basically a VW engine and he was quite familiar with it. I guess the Bentley owner saves a few quid that way.

An number of SL AMG's are within budget - SL65 AMG and SL63 AMG.

Worth a think, although I'm biased.

Utterly stunning 991 turbo s in yellow on the way home about quarter to 6 tonight. Reg plate like fdj1 or something... Lovely.

Think they must have been a pher as they pulled up along side then booted it so they must have seen my ph sticker as my car is fairly stealth.

I own a 911 turbo and the problem, when compared to the other two the OP asked about is that it's far too incognito - it's far too discrete. Sometimes you want to be noticed, and the 911 isn't the car for that.... Speed yellow somewhat counters that however, but I don't think I could live with it.... Almost got cobalt though.

Look for the best 6.0 Litre V12 last of the line XJS you can find and then put a manual box in it.It will do almost everything the Aston can do for a fraction of the cost.

Even though the OP only seems interested in high end, luxury British marques I think it is perfectly clear that he really needs a used 320D.

There you go...

Seriously, at that pride there is a while world of options waiting for you. We could go on giving ideas all the time, one thing though. the conti gt has a huge amount of warranty costs, so make sure there is a full warranty (a bit like a modern 911...). The Aston less so, although still expensive to run and maintain.

Remember they were £100k cars when new. The running costs would not have got any cheaper now they are 10 years old
