Every time I see a white car (especially if a convertible) I can't help but think it's the owner trying a little too hard to do the bella vita. 'All the stars and rich people in Hollywood and Miami drive white cars so I must look soooo glamorous and trendy'
I think you're probably over-analysing. I doubt very many people are thinking that. White is fine as a colour, however white with black wheels on mainstream saloons/estates/4x4's/mpv's just doesn't look right 99% of the time. However graphite coloured wheels usually look better (i.e. Volvo's R-Design ones). I saw a brand new 5 series touring yesterday that was white, with black wheels and a beige interior - looked horrible!
Until the recent increase in popularity of white cars I thought they were ok, largely because it was a colour used on fairly niche models. White stands out more than most other colours, and if you think your boggo Audi, BM, Merc or whatever needs to draw more attention to its mundanity you've only proved how subjective taste is.
There are a few cars that look good in white, mostly sports/super cars, the rest just look dull. I don't think any Audi looks good in white, and the same for BMWs. I don't get why anyone would go for a white Audi/BMW/Jag/Alfa when they all look so much smarter in other colours.
Mercedes do a bright white that the C class coupe looks good in, but the rest of the brand doesn't suit it.

the thing is you can post cars in white to justify how good looking they are, but you then can find a 'coloured' car that looks so much better.
The Audi rs4 looks so much better in colour, red, blue, the f430 in a blue would outlook any other colour.
White cars only really work on a few cars, pandas and ambulances
Your missing the point The Audi rs4 looks so much better in colour, red, blue, the f430 in a blue would outlook any other colour.

For many of us iconic / hero cars where white, ergo white is very desirable
The RS6 looks vastly better in the dark metallic blue

I'm not sure how you draw that conclusion. Have you never heard "what a stunning car, pity it's [fit colour of choice]" or "I'm going to own one of those when I'm rich, but in [colour of choice]"?For many of us iconic / hero cars where white, ergo white is very desirable
Colour is extremely subjective and choice is influenced by factors such as age, gender, culture. For instance in some cultures black is associated with mourning, red and blue with bravery, white with virginity etc etc.

All these people posting supercars in white, they look great because they are supercars and racers, not because they are white. I think the OP was more aimed at people buying mundane, boring cars like diesel Passat's and base spec BMW's which are just like fridges on wheels.
Exactly. Everyday fleet cars look naff in white. Sports cars look great. To those who prefer black cars fair enough, but I'm yet to see a black car that one month after leaving a show room isn't swirl mark city all over the body work.

I think a lot of us are agreeing: we like supercars in white, and not many other carsDave Hedgehog said:
It's very simple really, in that period of time there where a very large number of very cool cars that where white (many only in white) so there is a lot of positive association with the colour for many who lived with that era of cars
Your theory is people buy white cars now because the cars they admired as youngsters were predominantly white? Hmm, why don't they buy the actual car they admired then, or inferior models of? Do you think colour is more important than the type of car itself? If you have time I'd be interested to know what the cars that you mention were a "very large number" of which many were "only in white".

Well, yes, it was a bit tongue in cheek however it's quite clear to me that it's hardly so popular because it looks so damn good. The people who buy white cars do it because it's all the rage. And it's all the rage because clever media and marketing people tell them it is. I do think it has a lot to do with trying to emulate the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and they - by function of mostly living in hot climates - tend to drive white cars.
To me, white is a colour that is very much dependent on setting. A white car with blacked out windows pulling out of a ridiculously gated compound in Johannesburg looks the bees knees, because it's in its natural habitat. A fairytooth metallic pearlste white 518d with blacked out windows and glossy black 16" standard wheels bombing it down the A13 just past Tilbury on a rainy and grey Essex afternoon looks a bit sad and hideously out of place. The blonde bint or angry rep behind the wheel will think otherwise of course, and I suppose that's fair enough. But it's definitely not my cup of tea.
