OK Mrs BC just get her renewal from the AA, £268.40 for roadside, home start, relay and joint cover. She phoned the renewal team and this was reduced to £170. I then called and was quoted £139.99 as an 'introductory offer'. Dreadful way to alienate long term customers.

Not sure whether to join the AA or move to AN Other.

Had RAC for a year when I had a mitsubushi delica with a intermittent fuelling issue and had them out about 5 times in that year.

If I'd been able to find a regular mechanic as keen as their guys were to keep me moving instead of bursting into tears cos it's a bit of a different shape from mechanically identical UK vehicles I'd not have not had to flog the thing.

But while the service was great their pricing is like a lot of service providers - sub TV, insurance etc, it does seem to punish long term loyalty.

Which makes alternating between AA/RAC or Mrs BC or I as lead member the only sensible thing to do.

I'm going to take a look at the RAC special rates for TVR Car Club members. Perhaps that way I won't need this hassle every renewal year.

To be fair I've only had 1 years membership in 18 years of motoring. I know that when I need it I can just pay the f-in-the-a double premium price to be an instant member but how much have I saved?

Stuff both of them. AutoAid are by far the cheapest and don't do any of this auto-renew double the price renewal bks, just a nice letter to invite you to pay the same as last year.

Autoaid. Been with them for years and the couple of times I've used them they've been great.

My renewal quote from the AA was the same as the new customer price on the website so I assumed they had finally done away with the introduction prices - clearly not.
However when you add in the quidco offers they wouldn't come near it so I went to the RAC. I imagine I'll go back next year and leave the year after...

Anyone used them for call outs?

The site seems to say you pay out for costs incurred and the claim them back, an odd way to do things with potential for problems I would have thought ?

Get your annual renewal, check on line like for like for new customers. Ring up and sound a little bit miffed. Get annual cover for the same price as new customers. Just an annual bit of effort but works every time.

Yep, works exactly as per the other services but you need to pay the driver with a CC. Fill in a simple form, send it to them with the receipt and get your money back... Worked fine for he.

I had a very bad experience with the AA about 15 years ago and would never ever go back to them. I've had to call the RAC out a few times, every time they have been prompt and efficient.

If you have a Tesco clubcard you can get your RAC for free using your tesco points.

Just took a look at that. Not right for us as we never did get married tho 'Mrs' BC & I have been together for c25 years. Also don't fancy having to pay for work then claim back from them.

Green Flag give you a 50% discount on the next years premium if you don't call them out the previous year, or if they fail to get to you within 1 hour if you do call them out.

So what I am saying is neither.
The downside of Green Flag is they use local garages instead of their own mechanics which is a bit of a postcode lottery depending on where you break down. Like the idiot that turned up to "sort" my sisters car. Caused more problems than he solved. Compared to the AA and RAC Green Flags initial premiums aren't that much cheaper although I can see the attraction of the non call out discount where the bigger companies are doing the opposite.

I tend to play off the RAC & AA against each other at renewal time. I try to favour the RAC if possible as I occasionally take the car to the Isle of Man. The RAC cover that in their UK package whereas the AA say its part of their Euro package. So anytime I take the AA cover I'm not covered on the Isle of Man.

ADAC if you leave the sceptic Isle on a fairly regular basis. About 70 quid depending on exchange rate to cover you and your spouse wherever you are in Europe or the UK in whatever vehicle.

This thread has inspired me to see what I pay for AA. I pay £16 per month for me and my wife to be covered on any car. Should the car break down, it gets recovered home.

Christ, that's getting changed! I've not called them out in about 5 years!!

Just posted details of the renewal on Twitter. AA responded quick enough asking Mrs BC to call them. They said 'there are many factors which can effect a renewal quote' which is basically b******s as we have only called them out twice in 9 years.

Nice to see Twitter working though.

It works well. I've not had any problems and the money refunded within 5 days. The good thing is you get the nearest local recovery truck rather than a van who then orders up a recovery vehicle. I can't see why anyone would pay any more. The vehicles that have come out to me also worked for other breakdown companies but liked Autoaid callouts as they get the money on the day.
