RE: BMW M3 tester's notes: PH Blog
Discussion
I currently have an E92 M3 and will probably go for an M4 or used Carrera S with PDK and sports exhaust for around the same money next year. I am going to have a good drive of both but I have a feeling I'll prefer the M4. Sure the Pork will sound better but I don't get to redline my M3 as much as I'd like due to traffic etc and this is only when the M3 sounds good anyway imo. My M3 only sounds half decent when thrashing or cold start up.
I agree with what 'moose is saying in as much as the removal of choice and variation can only be bad thing. It may be the way the market has gone and regulations demand blah blah blah but it's still a shame.
I don't recall many people complaining about pre-e90/e60 M cars and their requirement to rev.

Well I'll wait for that then.Cheers,

I'm pretty sure that most tuners such as Birds can take a normal 335i and turn it into something close to the M3 for a lot less money. And it might sound better?

The "baby blue" launch colour - short term fashion? Or will it have staying power.
Cannot remember all the launch colours
E30 - White?
E36 - Yellow?
E46 - No idea
E92 - Melbourne Red?
I think the E36 was Dakar Yellow, and E46 was Phoenix Yellow for coupe/ Laguna Seca for conv / Silver Grey for the CSLCannot remember all the launch colours

E30 M3 conv may have been Alpine White, but not sure on the 2-dr saloon
Anyways back on topic.
I really don't like the fake exhaust noise nonsense slowly creeping onto performance cars. It's wrong in so many ways.
I have ordered a car with this fitted in spite of my disgust for it. Just can't manage to admit yet to my household as I'm worried about their reaction.

The new M3 sounds like an excellent car. I’m planning to buy a used model in 2-3 years, just after the facelift. Should be excellent value then.
All the talk about turbos, electric steering, etc. makes me laugh.
7 years from now everybody on PH will regard this car as the "last great M3" because the new one will be a hybrid. Another 7 years later everyone on PH will say the hybrid M3 was the "last great M3" because the new one will be fully electric and self-driving with a bespoke M software that allows for autonomous drifting in certain GPS-locked regions (i.e. racetracks).

If you look on page 13 of EVO 189 ( Dec 2013 ) it details some of the weight loss items.
The other article I was thinking of was this one

There was another M3-specific one a few years ago too, but it may have been in BMWCar. E30 SE vs E36 Imola vs E46 CSL vs E92 CP. IIRC it was a bit of a tie between the E30 and E46 in the end
