Yup. And this matters why, exactly? If the Boxster had half the power this does, it would still be infinite more fun than the Golf, IMO.
Yeah, I'll take the Boxster. Its very good value for money considering the package.
I'm also pretty sure that the Boxster will be quicker and faster anyhow (it is on paper)due to power and weight advantages despite being RWD.

Price vs Power is not the best way of measuring a car or its ability smile

The Boxster is hardly exception in terms of power to weight ratio either, it only has 250bhp/tonne. Still, it was never going to be a car for drag racers. smile

nice.

i've always preferred the cayman over the boxster, since i live in a climate where you need a roof for 9 1/2 months of the year. but were i to be living in cali or somewhere similar, this would be in my driveway.

"The gearing is a little too long with the manual....."

Why do they keep writing this cobblers? With 6 gears it's not exactly complicated to use a lower gear. Too many of these muppets jump out of their Focus into a sportscar and then whimper that it doesn't feel exactly the same to drive.

Exactly. Much like the road cars from Lotus the Boxster/Cayman are "handling cars" not "power cars". If you just want to go fast off the traffic lights some tedious Audi saloon will tick the box very easily.

82mph at redline in 2nd is long.

Based on what? The car goes fast in first and then you change to second. Sure, unlike a Ford Focus the car doesn't like moving off from standstill in second gear, but doesn't that make first gear completely superfluous unless you've got 4 passengers and the holiday luggage on board? Which a 2-seater never has to do.

The real world driving/overtaking performance of Boxster/Cayman in second gear is absolutely savage. As I said earlier - if people just want to blast off the traffic lights they can buy an Audi saloon.

Yes, but it would be better a little lower, in my opinion. I like to get through at least three gears before I have to calm down (112mph).

I haven't driven the car yet, but it sounds like on twisty technical roads of the kind I like most (think Tarn gorge, bits of the Alps, etc.) first will be overkill for anything that isn't an actual hairpin, and second will be a little too tall for the rest of it.

1st in a Boxster S is good for 46 mph. I like being decently in the power band coming out of ~30-40mph corners without banging straight into the limiter, as it gives the car a bit more flow. Also, part of the joy of a manual gearbox and a technical road is all the third-to-second heel+toe downshifts, IMO. If you're not into that then you'll be perfectly happy with the PDK, I guess.

There's already a thread started ages ago about the issue that was resurrected just this week: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=129...

Quite. Perhaps a blown westy megabusa for half the price might be a better option if we're comparing apples and bananas?

Lovely colour.

Great car I'm sure but I just can't get on with its looks sadly.

Used 991s please

I think you misunderstand what the real-world problem is with the gearing in the S. Because it is so tall, it means you cannot hear the sonorous engine for long before you are into illegal speed territory. There is no fun in being forced to drive around in 1st/2nd gears just so you can hear the engine at the upper rev range. Thrash a current generation Boxster S in third gear for example, and you will simply lose your licence very quickly. This really detracts from its fun factor and is the real un-doing of the manual car which is a real shame.

MyCC.

Oh dear, oh dear. Are we really now stuck in some weird timezone where what a car sounds like is more important than how it drives?

No wonder BMW and others are now selling cars which simulate engine and exhaust sounds through the stereo!

I won't be buying one because my Lamborghini and Tuscan cover all the bases of open top motoring for me, but this generation Boxster, really is a thing of beauty.

The design has a real maturity and cohesion that sets it apart from earlier versions. The interior displays the same traits.

It looks and presence are those a much more expensive vehicle.

I think Porsche will have hard time moving the game on to a similar extent with the replacement model, when the time comes.

Fair point.
I saw a red Boxster on base spec wheels the other day and it really did look great.

Can't say I think the larger wheels detract too much from the looks personally, but I know at the back of my mind its a styling necessity rather than engineering.

I'm attending a track day with Porsche at Silverstone to test drive this beaut....can't wait now! Although it will never have the thrills and acceleration of my Westfield it looks like the perfect all round sports/shopping car. wink
