slower than a golf R and twice the cost with the necessary options ticked
Yup. And this matters why, exactly? If the Boxster had half the power this does, it would still be infinite more fun than the Golf, IMO. Price vs Power is not the best way of measuring a car or its ability

Why do they keep writing this cobblers? With 6 gears it's not exactly complicated to use a lower gear. Too many of these muppets jump out of their Focus into a sportscar and then whimper that it doesn't feel exactly the same to drive.

The Boxster is hardly exception in terms of power to weight ratio either, it only has 250bhp/tonne. Still, it was never going to be a car for drag racers.
Exactly. Much like the road cars from Lotus the Boxster/Cayman are "handling cars" not "power cars". If you just want to go fast off the traffic lights some tedious Audi saloon will tick the box very easily. Ozzie Osmond said:

82mph at redline in 2nd is long. Why do they keep writing this cobblers? With 6 gears it's not exactly complicated to use a lower gear. Too many of these muppets jump out of their Focus into a sportscar and then whimper that it doesn't feel exactly the same to drive.

Based on what? The car goes fast in first and then you change to second. Sure, unlike a Ford Focus the car doesn't like moving off from standstill in second gear, but doesn't that make first gear completely superfluous unless you've got 4 passengers and the holiday luggage on board? Which a 2-seater never has to do.The real world driving/overtaking performance of Boxster/Cayman in second gear is absolutely savage. As I said earlier - if people just want to blast off the traffic lights they can buy an Audi saloon.

Yes, but it would be better a little lower, in my opinion. I like to get through at least three gears before I have to calm down (112mph).The real world overtaking performance of Boxster/Cayman in second gear is absolutely savage.

I haven't driven the car yet, but it sounds like on twisty technical roads of the kind I like most (think Tarn gorge, bits of the Alps, etc.) first will be overkill for anything that isn't an actual hairpin, and second will be a little too tall for the rest of it.Why do they keep writing this cobblers? 1st in a Boxster S is good for 46 mph. I like being decently in the power band coming out of ~30-40mph corners without banging straight into the limiter, as it gives the car a bit more flow. Also, part of the joy of a manual gearbox and a technical road is all the third-to-second heel+toe downshifts, IMO. If you're not into that then you'll be perfectly happy with the PDK, I guess.
There's already a thread started ages ago about the issue that was resurrected just this week: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=129...

I won't be buying one because my Lamborghini and Tuscan cover all the bases of open top motoring for me, but this generation Boxster, really is a thing of beauty.
The design has a real maturity and cohesion that sets it apart from earlier versions. The interior displays the same traits.
It looks and presence are those a much more expensive vehicle.
I think Porsche will have hard time moving the game on to a similar extent with the replacement model, when the time comes.

The wheels are getting too big. I think they detract from the overall appearance of the car.
Fair point. Can't say I think the larger wheels detract too much from the looks personally, but I know at the back of my mind its a styling necessity rather than engineering.
