That car has a beauty that the replacement, nice though it is, has not equalled.

It's aged well but modern Astons are far better proportioned and nicer to look at.

The interior is a joke for such an expensive car as well.

I'll take a DB9!

What a car! And the fact it's so flawed makes me love it more. I wish manufacturers would stop chasing perfection so that we end up with some character instead of clinical precision in our machines.

Point of order, AM did make some with a manual box, I think it was a limited number of Vanquish S Black or something.

Sloppy reporting.

No Vanquish S left Newport Pagnell factory with a stick.

See what I wrote on page 2 :

The 50 last Vanquish S built in June/July 2007 were the "Ultimate Edition".
There was no mechanical change at all, only a different exterior color called "Ultimate Black", white stitching in the interior, and black door handles.
They were all in 2+2 configuration. But with the same gearbox than the S. The Vanquish/S never left Newport Pagnell with a stick, AM proposed the conversion later.

This car has aged very well, looks better than the newer Vanquish in my opinion, which to me is just a Virage with a spoiler and deeper front end. Very rare as well, was nearly 3 years ago I last saw an old Vanquish like this.

The question is, will the Works team put a manual in the new Vanquish?

Massively overrated car!

Doesn't feel particularly special or fast - nor particularly well built.

A DB9 can NOT be compared to a Vanquish 460 bhp, there are both in a different category ! The DB9 is a great GT but will never have the appeal, the rawness, the bestiality, the charisma and the thrill of the Vanquish.
Plus, you can not compare the production numbers of the DB9, I don't know how many have been made since 2004 but I guess it would be around 20 000.
Sorry but since 2004 with the same VH platform, AM developed the DB9/DBS/Virage/DB9 2013/Vanquish 2013, globally they are all the same (same design, same interior) with some minor changes every time and a bit more power, that's it.

With only 2578 ever built, the Vanquish/S is almost like a limited edition.

I bet it is a superb drive , I drove a DB9 the other day , great engine, terrible gearbox and poor chassis, but to be able to self select with that beautiful motor is well worth the 15 k outlay IMHO .

People keep comparing to the DB9, really at this price point (used or new) especially adding the £15k for a proper box it should be compared to the DBS.

Now DBS vs Vanquish....

Mine is a manual DBS in Aston Martin racing green please!

Next, would be the old handbuilt supercharged Vantage V600 - more presence than the Vanquish.
A Vanquish S with a Manual box would be my 3rd AM in my fantasy garage.

The awful flappy-paddle in the Vanquish was the reason I bought a 575M. Saying that Ferrari's efforts weren't much better.
I believe it is exactly the same gearbox (although software is different). I bought a Ferrari 550 (manual) on the same logic, and still wish I'd bought a Vanquish, for the sound alone.

Over the years I have driven two manual conversions to date and both were great (as described in the article) except the build quality of the revised console on the earliest ones was laughable.

looks like they've finally (a decade on) solved that. I think about it, and yearn.

One of the fundamental differences is the much smaller rotational inertia in the Ferrari engine, allowing much faster and cleaner shifts, whereas AMLs rather chunkier V12 is less amenable to loosing or gaining revs during a quick shift without over stressing the transmission!

400 hours were necessary to build a Vanquish at Newport Pagnell, that was two times more than for a DB9 at Gaydon.
Back in the day, you'd be told it took longer to paint a Vanquish than it took to build a DB9. No idea if it is true, but a decade on, I still remember being told it on a walk round of the old factory with Kingsley Riding-Felce (if his name is spelt correctly).

It should be true, I don't know how many painting coats were applied but I can assure you that the quality of the Vanquish's paint is awesome.
