It is clear in my mind that all marques (who use EGR) in 'high performance' diesel applications suffer at the hands of dosing too much EGR (to meet NoX regs) which in turn soots up the various parts and engine.

We all have our own opinions and mine is one which Honda became aware of such potential in their earlier cars and altered the EGR map to combat this, which had the nett result of reducing the efficiency over the former years cars.

Sound far fetched? - I have witnessed exactly that in another Marque!
EGR makes fuel economy worse so if they turned it down you should see better mpg and in turn lower CO2.

just to add my 2 pence, I hade the 1.6 DTEC for a weekend and it averaged 62MPG mixed driving, managed to get 79MPG on the M1 doing 70MPH. Compared to my then Seat Leon 1.6 ecomotive which had similar MPG claims could only manage 49AVG and around 64MPG at best on the motorway.

2015 Civic 1.6 iDtec.

I think the only time I have ever seen under 60mpg is when using it on very small undulating roads with lots of stop/start and lots of accelerating.
Most of the time we see 62-65mpg. On a run, just over 70mpg when motorway speeds are about 70mph. Much above 70mph and it does start dropping quickly.

I think the engine is pretty amazing as the performance is good too.

My civic 1.6 dtec MY 15 is averaging about 56MPG, problem is on higway, there i hardly manage 47MPG ( about 6 litres i am more familiar in metric units), and i am very dissapointed with civics consuption.

My wife has a Civic i-Dtec on a '63 plate. I really like it, and it's perfect for her. On weeks where she uses it for shorter runs it sits consistently at 54mpg. On weeks where it gets longer runs, it returns about 66mpg. So the average for our use is probably in the middle. The best I've had out of it was 72mpg, driving home from the Lake District, and that was on the up as the journey went on. My basic calculations show it's typically within a 10% margin for error according to the trip readout.

Overall, I'm really impressed with it. It's a nice drive and notably better than the competition, I thought. I like Honda cars but I think they really made a good fist of making a diesel ecobox that drives well. It won't pull from 10mph in third as effortlessly as a bigger diesel will but if you use the gearbox it proves to have quite a useful slug of power. It'll happily pull to beyond 90mph without much effort. It's a lightweight diesel that doesn't feel nose heavy, which I like. I'm glad we got it and I like driving it.

£28,000 for a diesel civic and you're worried about a few extra MPG's?

You could run a V12 with a fuel leak and still be better off overall.

Oh, I dunno. 84.5 quid today to fill up, based on 129.9 vpower, and 208 miles!

14.6mpg doesn't go that far... And that's without a fuel leak.

But then a 1.6 civic doesn't have the necessary shove from 100+ I find, so horses for courses really... laugh

Quick 2:48am mathematics say you can run that 14.6mpg machine for almost 69 thousand miles for what the OP paid for his 1.6 diesel civic

In light of the fact that the OP sold his civic, probably losing at least £4000 in the process (I do hope not) I'd say you win if you've got a V-12

Not to mention the way prices on anything remotely interesting have gone over the last few years, even old XJ12's seem to have quintupled in value.
