You talk like you have a stake in Pistonheads because you look at it. Get a grip! It's free, you have not given anything to it, you have just taken from it. Stay or go, but stop blasting off about things that don't matter.
Not 100% accurate though is it

PH charge advertisers to display on this site, they agree a rate based on the popularity of said site, if the user base is alienated and moves away to one of the other motoring forums then those rates will change as the page views decrease. It's a 2 way relationship

Of course, there's a wholly acceptable answer which will please everyone.
  • First, bring back the words "Speed" and "Matter", satisfying those who don't like to see anything taken away.
  • Second, insert the word "Doesn't", satisfying those who feel concerned and aware.
And then you've got it,

PistonHeads: Speed Doesn't Matter

Job jobbed!
So we can go as fast as we want, cunning!

That's your idea of a 2-way relationship? They host the site, employ the journalists, create the content, invest, manage, maintain.
And you click on the site.
Agreed, they need us otherwise it's not worth it to them, but if you follow that argument they are within their rights to move away from 'speed matters' whenever they feel it might give a bigger audience.

Why has it gone?
Because it's not a very popular commercial message and they've got a very commercial (and profitable) classifieds section to look after.

I get it, I do, but it's been executed horribly. It should have been put to vote to the users of the site so we could all pick a new one.

"Driving matters"
"335ds mattered once"
"Redbull gives you ammo"

etc etc

Pistonheads is a community, it seems the new owners don't get that.
I agree, it's a shame. Just wondering what the official line from PH is?

Anyone?

How about following your own advice and moan about moaning there? You'll fit in perfectly. Winging matters!

I moved over here during the Great Evo Forum Exodus in what? 2002-3 or so? They managed to kill that with st new forum software (never been back but still pick up the mag). Pistonheads even had a dedicated subforum for ex-Evo members for a time.

What caused me to bail out of PH shortly after was someone talking about BMW V6 engines without being put right. A similar thing reoccurred here just recently on the straight 6 thread. For me it's not about the tagline - 'Speed Matters' is rubbish anyway. As forums get massively more popular, the signal to noise ratio implodes and advertising takes over. It happens everywhere eventually. People gravitate elsewhere and the cycle continues.

This is still a good generalist forum, but it won't last forever. The tagline doesn't matter but it may indicate another nail being driven into the coffin. Still, it's had a good run.

Political correctness I'd guess.
Yup, the desire to avoid anything which might be controversial. Appeasement of idiots, basically.
It won't have been because of political correctness, because that's not what political correctness is or how it works.

It's much more likely to be a marketing/branding/positioning decision based on where Haymarket sees the site going.

Political correctness is just a guilt based form of oppression, and must be opposed when ever it makes its slimy, insidious, nasty appearance.
It attempts to take away freedom of speech or action from the many using an implied sense of guilt over an issue, (possibly in an attempt to target the minority who don't abide by the normal (any) rules of society, and who never will abide by any rules, no matter what the PC brigade might do)
It is strange how those who indulge in applying PC are generally unseen, faceless, officious individuals or groups, (who have through PC, found a way of gaining control, and oppressing others, that without PC, they just would not have) but who almost never show themselves.
Its also strange how selective the PC brigade are in the way they apply their nasty insidious cancer to those around them.
The hallmark of the politically correct, is a complete inability to face up to the truth, especially if the truth happens to be an unpalatable one (to them)
If only PC was just appeasement of idiots, unfortunately Political correctness is far more sinister than that.
Whatever you might think it is, political correctness is just about creating an environment of inclusivity in which all people are treated with respect. It's true that it's a blunt tool that is often clumsily applied, but I think that's probably because there are people who are sadly unable to empathise with those who are on the receiving end and will never understand that calling a black person a "n1gger" or a disabled person a "flid" etc etc is not cool and is the thin end of a genuinely sinister wedge.

Personally I think that people should be able to say whatever they like, as that way it's easy to tell who the dicks are, but at the same time I do understand that if people consistently refer to certain groups pejoratively then it fosters prejudices that create societal disadvantages for those groups...so I think that on balance we're better off with political correctness than without.

The cause isn't helped by the fact that people interpret any decision by an authority that they don't fully understand (such as the removal of a website's tagline) as being about "political correctness". It generally isn't.

Personally I think the 'powers at be' should just answer the question and then the matter can be grumbled about for a while and then put to rest.

This deliberate silence just feeds everyone speculating and getting snotty with each other..

Do you actually believe that 'the powers at be' have the slightest interest in what we think?

Do you believe that they have ever even glanced at the forums?

This is the difference between PH as invented by Petrol Ted and the business now owned by HM!

Spot. On. yes

I had a PH sticker on my cars for years. I no longer have a PH sticker on any of my cars, nor would I buy anything specifically PH-related.

Pistonheads is first and foremost a classifieds site, the forum and community aspect are, imo, some way down the pecking order.

My problem (and I realise this sounds daft) is that there's nowhere else to go as such, and I've gotten to "know" many of the regulars.

I have to agree with you. However I did say what I think they SHOULD do rather than what I EXPECT them to do.

Pistonheads has changed dramatically since the days of TVR fun n frollicks.... frown

Stuart went some time back when his position became "redundant" and Paul leaves shortly for another classic car forum I am led to believe. Where does that leave, out of interest, the Friday Services at Le Mans this year?

I'll be there for the Friday Service, not missing LM! It will be my last official PH event.

As for my departure, that's one of the reasons why I leave comment on this subject to Nathan etc, I'm not as privvy to info as I once was. That's only fair with me heading off to Classic Driver, but I can assure you that I listen. Many a night has been spent debating on these very forums. Ah, memories.
