Generally similar approaches to my own then.

Fair enough but I'm not sure what limits have to do with it. If I am driving close to parked cars with a pavement on the other side then I will be going pretty slowly regardless of the whether the signs say 10 or 100mph.

I would be mortified if I caused an accident due to my own stupidity/incompetence hence why I drive in a manner where I am 99.9% confident that I will not do so. If someone dived out in front of me in a manner which could not be foreseen and I killed them then I wouldn't feel bad about it (say they jumped off a bridge in front of me on the motorway).

30, 40, 50 and 60 are king but motorways I use my judgement and keep my eyes open for everything and anything.
M25 variable speed limits is all about keeping the flow going so keep distance from traffic in front to reduce braking and causing jams

I drive with 'appropriate' speed. This will normally mean i'm always breaking the speed limit, but i've yet to have an accident or point on my license, so would like to think i judge things quite well!

My golden rule is that i will only drive spiritedly on roads i know like the back of my hand.

I think very little of them. I decide what's safest, it's rarely what the stick says and is often lower.

Because without posted speed limits you'd inevitably have someone 2 feet off your bumper distracting your attention from the road and surroundings. Even with posted limits, this is a problem.

I respect urban speed limits, other than 20 zones, which are usually in places where you wouldn't be going more than 20 anyway due to visibility/hazards. Quite often I will drive down residential streets lower than the 30 limit due to these reasons. What I would like to see more of is temporary speed limits outside schools, make it 20mph at start/kicking out times, but leave it to be a normal road the rest of the time.

On the otherhand, I have very little respect for the 40/50 limits on all the roads around Warwickshire, whish anywhere else would be NSL, as metioned in the original post, limits on country roads should be used where there is a hazard. Blanket usage means people ignore them, then don't have that bit of extra warning when they are approaching a genuine hazard - crying wolf is a good analogy.

I also think the motorway limit should be raised.

The main problem I think is that whilst on a site like Pistonheads, where we are enthusiasts (and driving gods wink ) we are probably all able to pick a suitable speed for a given road and conditions, whereas the general public may need to be told a speed to stick to, or just stick to 40mph everywhere.

Zero respect, but I still obey most of them for license keeping purposes. The proliferation of roads near me that have dropped from NSL to 50 with SPECS fitted all the way through (A614/A60 to name two) where they are decent straight roads with no need whatsoever for the reduction really boils my wee wee but what can you do?

Sounds the same as me.

The 99% bit.

I have yet to see a single artic travelling over 80, and I drive motorways every day. I stick to 75 when possible, and I overtake a lot of vehicles, including cars.

I would hazard a guess that it is considerably less than 99%.

How often are people complaining on here about the MLM's driving at 60 ish.

How to people feel about the 40mph limit for trucks on single carriageways?

Anyone who has travelled the A1 north of Newcastle will know what I am on about,

99% seems pretty precise to me. Next time you drive a motorway with unrestricted speed capabilities, drive at 80 and tell us what happens.

I do exactly this, always stick to the 20/30 limit in towns, villages, cities etc. Often think they're too slow at times, but then, I'd hate to be the one that knocks down some little moron that's just ran across the road in front of me, get locked up for careless driving (up to 5 years now) and lose my car, job, license all because someone couldn't be bothered to teach their little scrote how to cross the street properly *and breathe*....then I like to have fun on NSL A/B Roads and go into cruise mode on Motorways.

A lot of people will put their foot down.

What I'm saying is that when I'm going 70 I'm overtaken more than I overtake.

I don't disagree with that.

Too many poster come on here quoting figures and stastistics they have made up in their heads.

The current motorway limit is fine because it's not enforced to any great degree and an observant driver can cruise at 80-85mph, 20 and 30 zones fine (well most of them)

But the creeping changes to NSL roads down to 50 and in some cases 40 gets my goat, again always drive to the conditions, but if the road is clear, well sighted with no kitten factories I'll use my discretion.

I rarely break explicit limits. The national limit tends to get treated with a fair amount of contempt. smile

Driving at 80 (a real 80, not a speedometer value) on the southern part of the M3 or the M27 outside the rush, you'll overtake significantly more vehicles than you're overtaken by.
