How much respect do you have for speed limits?

On one of my regular drives (I do it 4 times a week, and not for fun), it goes NSL, 30, 40, 30, NSL, 40, 30, 40, 50 in one mile - the tiny remaining section of NSL in teh middle of all that will no doubt be gone soon as they think "may as well make it 40 - or 30"
It does seem feckin stupid that it change so much, and in the 30 years I've driven that section of roads, I've never seen a single crash, the roads haven't changed (apart from the massive potholes of course) - so why have they reduced all the limits? and why so many changes in a short distance?

1. Hits the oncoming car with all its airbags and crumplezones.

I had a similar situation, on a winding, single carriageway A road. A caravn was overtaking me, when a lorry came round the corner the other way, cue the caravanner squishing me between his plastic toilet on wheels, and a thankfully friendly hedge...1. I caught up with him a few miles later, and when I questioned him on what he thought he was doing, he just said 'what was I supposed to do?' maybe not overtake when you can't see if it's clear?!
I got lucky that day, but it's good to know that so many people consider my life an acceptable cost of their journey times (and for the record I pay £485 'road tax'...)
