From FixMyStreet today: Observed at 8.45am parked almost opposite Trafalgar Junior School entrance in Third Cross Road, Twickenham. Car completely blocking pavement; children and parents with pushchairs & buggies forced on to very busy road to get by. There is no pavement parking along this stretch of the road!
What goes through the mind of someone who does that ?J4CKO said:

Probably done it to prevent Doris in her scruffy Yaris parking up alongside and scraping it. Sod's law says you can be the only car in a car park, but some useless fly-catching mouth breather will come along and feel that they need to park right next to you. I was dropping a hire van back a few months ago, car park with loads of spaces, just as I'm about to get out some prick in an A-class swings in right next to me. I make a point of starting up, moving the van one space along and giving the thick chav the biggest glare. In hindsight probably could have just doored his car, make him think twice about parking up against other vehicles unnecessarily.

Lack of enforcement, pure and simple.

I've come to the conclusion that some people's spatial awareness is so piss poor that they are incapable of driving into a parking space without the reference point of another vehicle alongside.Muddle238 said:

I've had my trolley next to the car loading up and an idiot indicating that he wanted to park in the space where the trolley was, in a virtually empty car park... after a minute of gesticulating like a maniac he parked in one of the many empty spaces. It's no wonder some people get beaten up.I was dropping a hire van back a few months ago, car park with loads of spaces, just as I'm about to get out some prick in an A-class swings in right next to me. Hard to say, is perhaps the road very narrow?
Although that is extreme, I can see why in some case, cars park partially on the pavement, to keep the road from being blocked.
Arrrrrrgh!Although that is extreme, I can see why in some case, cars park partially on the pavement, to keep the road from being blocked.
The FOOTWAY ("pavement") is part of the fking ROAD. The other part is called the CARRIAGEWAY.
It is an offence to drive (and so it must follow, to park) on the "pavement". See section 72 of the Highways Act 1835, which creates the offence of wilfully riding or driving a carriage on the footway by the side of any road made or set apart for the use or accommodation of foot passengers. For the purposes of this provision, the term 'wilfully' means purposely, (Fearnley v Ormsby (1879)) and the term 'carriage' includes bicycles, tricycles, velocipedes and other similar machines, (section 85 of the Local government Act 1988) and motor vehicles, (section 191 of the Road Traffic Act 1988)
Oh, and have a "way to go, genius" for making drivers' lives easier by forcing pedestrians to step into the road to go around your fking hideous, woefully parked abomination.
Seriously? Parking on verges and footways? Unless it's specifically permitted JUST DON'T DO IT. It's THAT fking simple.
There's a Mini owner near me who regularly has to straighten up her driver's side mirror before driving away. One day it's going to end up on the floor, and if she chases me for damages, she's going to be on the receiving end of a personal injury claim for a sore elbow. If I had a "lawful excuse" for doing so (and if they weren't so damned heavy to carry everywhere) then I'd start carrying a bloody lump-hammer with me, so as to assist other pedestrians by removing all or part of such obstructions.
People who obstruct our ROADS? Wkers one and all. I couldn't give a flying fk if the nearest place you can park without causing an obstruction is your own driveway. If that's the case, fking walk. If you are so selfish and ignorant that you'll happily force FOOTWAY users out of the safe space set aside for THEIR use, and into the CARRIAGEWAY where it is far less safe, then you ought to not be driving anyway...

...it's about time we stopped wringing our hands and patting idiots on the head with a "there, there, it's OK. We know it's often hard to find a suitable place to park so just, like, y'know, park where the fk you please..." and started telling these retards that it's definitely NOT OK to block footways and obstruct junctions just because they're terribly busy and walking from the next street would take up too much of their valuable time.
I see it all the time locally. "Woe is me! There's NEVER anywhere to park in fleet High Street, and all the car parks charge me MONEY!!!" Yet just ONE STREET AWAY are a good number of parking spots that are free for an hour, which is plenty of time to stroll to the shops and run a few errands. A couple of streets further from the shops parking, although outside residential properties, is completely unrestricted on one side of each road. But that would mean a walk of maybe five, or perhaps even (Shock! Horror!) TEN WHOLE MINUTES!!! But we can't be having that, eh? Imagine all the Facebook 'likes' you could post, and YouTube cat videos you could watch in those vital minutes of your life. Far better to force pedestrians into the roadway to ensure you're quicker getting your copy of the Sun or pint of milk without troubling those pesky legs of yours...
