Allow me to explain.....

http://www.middlewichguardian.co.uk/news/12942709....

AN AMBULANCE crashed into a building in Middlewich during the early hours of Monday morning.

The collision caused traffic chaos in the town as one of the main routes through the town, Lewin Street, had to be closed due to the building being deemed as unsafe.

The ambulance crashed into the arch way of Longcross Court flats at around 12.30am when it tried to drive into the courtyard to attend to a resident.

The arch way partially collapsed onto the ambulance, which remained stuck underneath.

A spokesperson from North West Ambulance Service said: “At approximately 00.30 this morning, one of our ambulances was involved in an incident where it became jammed under an entrance to a property in Middlewich causing some structural damage.

“Both crew members were unhurt and a second response unit which was present at the time, was able to continue to attend the patient the vehicles had been sent to. There was no delay to our response to the patient.

Shocking standards of driving by the lad/lass behind the wheel.

Vehicle is double manned? Passenger should be out giving driver guidance.

Bad skills/drills.

HWMBO has a cousin who's a paramedic so must try and find out what happened (assume he wasn't driving or I'd have heard about it by now hehe). Caused chaos at rush hour next morning, mostly by people having a good old stare and wondering how the feck they did it.biggrin

Or bad design of building layout prevents Ambulances and fire tenders entering, well done someone. The article does say this was mentioned to the council some time ago.

That is obviously another angle which should be considered - I am sure the Ambulance Service Bigwigs will be beating their drums very loudly from that point of view.

Or perhaps the driver should know the height of their vehicle, as there will be a height meter fitted to the vehicle and the height was clearly marked on the building.

Bridge-bashing is a sackable offence where I work.

I was going to post something similar but had my diplomatic head on. laugh

My lorry is well marked at 12' 6" and should I get it stuck under a bridge then my ass is in a sling!!!

Was it clearly marked on the building, should be but, who knows.

As far as marked in the vehicle, I must find out, curious. If you hire a transit, don't think that's marked?

The Transit I hired from enterprise a while back had a height meter fitted, I think it's a legal requirement.

It's interesting actually how many of those kinds of developments have popped up around these parts. I know of a couple where to access the small estates you need to go under part of the house like that. Seems to be the in thing here, presumably as it maximises space.

Never stopped to consider before how emergency services would gain access, particularly the fire service.

Depends on the height of the vehicle I think. Probably marked in hi-top ones but not normal Transits.

Bridge bashing was a sacking offence when I drove buses n coaches too, stupid error to make.

FYI checked with our friendly local ambulance driver, it's marked in his cab.

Expensive mistake.
