Drive bits of it every day on the way to work at the moment. Nice road, annoying when it's busy as there's not a whole lot of overtaking on some stretches. If I get bored of an evening I am known to just get in the car and pick a direction, plenty of equally exciting and better surfaced roads around there!

Agree there are some nice bits along this route but beware the Sussex pothole, which seems to still be proliferating on local roads.
+1

Also watch out for the 40 mph club out in droves,
many locals who display woeful driving standards,
rampant use of hand held mobile phones and
folks in rental cars from the nearby big airport.

I guess now that we are close to the longest day, there
are some chances for a decent run from sunrise to 6am,
but don't bank on it for long.

The local council's favourite safety device is the 40 mph speed limit.

I've used this on hundreds of occasions going to the Bluebell Railway (a must-visit, especially now it's got to East Grinstead). Can be rather amusing if it's not too busy. There's also a fabulous bit of the A22, somewhere in the vicinity of EGR, I forget exactly where, on which if it's quiet (it usually is) it's possible to build up some SERIOUS speed... had some very amusing early morning/late evening drives there either side of Bluebell trips...

A great set of roads, my local haunt in fact.

Some are seriously quick roads, but can catch the average driver out in poor conditions. I love the stretch between Crawley and Turners Hill, that S-bend either way is cloud9 but when there's nothing but you and the road it can be incredible heading towards TH. I love that it all flows nicely too. Did you anyone ever see - or hear hehe - a bright orange Volvo V70R on these roads?

Indeed - there should be a paragraph category for quality of the tarmac also.

Wow - I drive this road every day (at least the portion from EG to Turners Hill) and would never describe it as my dream drive! (possibly bcos it is part of my commute).

In fact I've just come back the other way, following a horse box at 20-30mph (not uncommon) and then once it had gone one of the 40 everywhere brigade.

The local drivers who see a bend and stamp on the brakes, the skip lorries who don't like to use their own side of the road (their depot is on this road), the Community Speedwatch Vigilantes, massive potholes that take ages to get fixed and the Turners Hill crossroads itself (where it can take 10 mins to get across if you time it wrong), all make me think there are far better roads out there......it can be nice when quiet but my bit doesn't last that long.....

Each to their own though....

Sounds ok, but I have to say you chose to stop in some pretty daft places for the sake of a photo.
I'm glad it's not just me - that first picture makes my teeth itch.
It was very early and I was more concerned with driving than taking pics! Must try harder next time...

I have to agree with this - it's part of my daily commute too and the shoddy road surface can be a right pain on the narrower stretches whee there is less room for manouvre.

The dawdlers often take offense too should they be swiftly dispatched.

In white XFR if anyone want to give me a wave byebye

When I'm enjoying B-roads before breakfast I generally imagine that there's a cow in the middle of the road round every bend, and pick my stopping distance accordingly.

From now on I'll imagine a parked car and someone holding a camera instead. Let's hope other road users are expecting you to be there too. eek

I go up and down some of these roads quite often. There good fun if its clear (night time, early morning etc).

Look out a silver Twingo.(I might have seen some of the other ph cars, I'm pretty sure i've seen a white XFR a few times).

Personally I quite like my airport run. More fun than going on the motorway anyway.

Hopefully that works.

I've lived in this area for 8 years and love the roads around here. I drive them daily and they are probably the reason that I still drive my car even though most people probably think I should have out grown it. The road from Balcombe to Haywards Heath past the viaduct is also a good drive - curvy, hilly, hump bridge, forest, tight corners. Wave if you see me in my black RenaultSport Clio 200 with a PH sticker on the back.

Great picture of Balcombe Viaduct, i've been lucky enough to drive over it in all types of weather at all different times of the day. It's a fantastic view up there when the sun is out cloud9

Thanks for posting the route. Tried it out early this morning, bit damp but great fun though there is one less squirrel in the world.
Usually I do the Horsham to Petersfield A272 run, which is also recommended.
Any other suggestions for good driving roads in South East appreciated...
