RE: Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-R
Discussion
I'm more interested in what the non-r would do with the same tyres as the leon.
If anything this goes to show that you can spend thousands on upgrading your car but it's only worth a few seconds over a long lap of a tough circuit, or that you're wasting your time unless you up the power.
But actually I'm more interested in what Honda will do with the civic type-r...

Am I massively out of touch with car prices now or something? £47k on a Golf seems a little ridiculous when you consider the nearly new / ex demo market at that price includes things like the C63 AMG and the Jaguar XKR..Just wait to see how much the Trophy's loose in deprecation.
So 4 seconds is smashing it in a car with no rear seats and costing 36k, well played Renault on the big margin on the lap times for that much more and not as practical. Granted the Leon had been tweaked as well but still had all it's seats in, i'd be looking at doing a stripped version of it and sending it back again if I worked for them to just annoy Renaults parade
Well done Renault....for building a race car.
I find it really really funny that everyone is so happy that Renault broke SEATs record. I was expecting the reaction to be negative because Renault have gone mental just to beat an amazing time set by SEAT and cost 8k more in the process. It just shows how good the SEAT Leon Cupra is and how much you have to modify a Megane to get anywhere near.
Everyone was complaining [including pistonheads] that SEAT used uprated brakes, removed aircon, lighter wheels and nicer tyres. Now Renault basically strip the car, uprated suspension, exhaust, remap, wheels, tyres, seats and everyone is cool with that?
Smells of badge snobbery to me.

Years ago, 4wd would have been the preserve of super-saloons, as would most of the options I ticked to get that Golf up to more than £47K, if they were available at all - DSG gearboxes aren't cheap, just under £3K on sat-nav isn't cheap, £1K on fancy-dan rheo dampers isn't cheap. This stuff adds up and wasn't available before.
On the other hand, the base price of the Golf R is still just about £30K, so it's not all options - some of it is just that the base cars themselves are more expensive.

The difference is that Renault say they have removed option A and B and fitted C and D to do the record. SEAT removed the AC (which weighs a lot and causes drag on the engine) and fitted bits not actually available on the car. Regardless of a 'performance Pack' coming out in the future they fudged the numbers. Whos to say the engine didnt have an 'optimised' map aswell. Hey the Renault might have done.
This is the issue with these comparisons and the manufacturers have to come across as infallible to be seen a credible. SEAT failed.
I agree though this time as per my last post is slightly hollow. I want to know what a standard Trophy with the options ticked can do. That's a genuine comparison.

I think the main complaint was that those removals and add-ons on the Seat weren't available on the production car.I find it really really funny that everyone is so happy that Renault broke SEATs record. Props to Renault for making an R26.R successor. Though I have to say, for a dedicated track car, I'd rather something much lighter, and in this price range there's quite a lot of competition.

I don't think you appreciate just how difficult it is to take 4 seconds out when you're up at this sort of level. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
