The porka was ruled out as I was originally looking at a cayman but didnt like the interior - new one is much better but 56k is too much money even on a finance/pcp deal, did go to the Solihull Porsche dealer and had a look, managed to set of an alarm in the showroom of a 911 - that wasnt awkward at all....

dont mind looking like a pri*k with a helmet on - I think I would wear one all the time in the atom as well...

S3 finance is looking good but im just not sure the car is 'worth' the asking price, im sure the residuals would be decent but i suspect it would lose the majority 'chunk' of its depreciation as i brought it..

I have emailed zenos, any idea on engines they use? bit worried about a brand new dealer with not much history but the car looks nice.

Can easily get into a nice spec new shape Cayman for mid to low 40's.. Agree the interior on the new one is in a different league to the old one.

If Exige S3 is out due to price have you thought about the S1, S2 or 340R. Not quite clear from the thread whether 2nd hand cars are "in scope" but haven't seen them mentioned yet.

I would consider a second hand car if it came with the reliability, S1 exige doesnt really tickle me (tho I appreciate they are good)

An S2 would be nice but not sure I would want one over an Atom and the price difference for a decent one isnt that much, s2 with low mileage 25k ish

definitely more food for thought than I had though and the mrs does like the lotus..

G40R is a stunning car, very nearly bought one for my early mid life crisis. Went C63 instead and very happy with it too. I'd recommend a look at the Ginetta website and a trip to a Garforth for a test drive if you want a track toy!

Exige S1 in my opinion. I reckon they're going to start rising in price too.

I'd try my best to own a Elfin T5 if it was me with 40k, not as focussed as some other suggestions but possibly lots of fun on and off the track, plus a nice break to Oz for a test drive, Its the engine and rarity that draws me to it:-)

How did I forget Noble M12's!! Definitely worth a look MrLizard I reckon. Drove one on an "experience" day and would love one, it was the best of the 5 supercars I drove.

Have a word with the wife for vetoing a Caterham. It's arguably the best choice of the lot - relative practicality, superb residuals, and matches your needs perfectly. In the R *00 guises, bloody rapid!

Failing that, I second what Olber said above. £30k-40k spent on one of those would be a VERY serious bit of kit. My mate is currently building one, with a turbocharged engine. So far, it's looking like he'll have it done for just over £20k, and he hasn't been shy with specs.

Or go one step further down the Ginetta route:
