What seems like a life time ago I was into rods and customs in a big way. One of my friends was Cliff Moore who started the custom car show at Doncaster race course, which became the show to attend.
I built many cars over the years but the Ford Pop I built I never quite finished, having to move to Bristol with work, and sold it to a mate in Barnsley where he still has it after many years of use. Always regreted not finishing that one.
There were several layers to the scene back then, from the crap cars jacked up with a red light underneath, to highly custom painted cars from the likes of Ray Mumford, through to high end cars from Nick Butler, but it was the thing to do then with club membership in 100's in Steel City Cruisers for example.
We never seemed to get it quite right as some of the gassers were dangerous to drive on the road and our versions of US style seemed to be not quite there some how. What was without doubt was the skills were there to build top notch cars that handled well but there never seemed enough money for the majority. It used to pain me that for the same price as a fiberglass UK copy, with a bit more you could have new tin or vintage tin in the states.
Memories are of going en mass to Chelsea, from Barnsley, to Leeds and Manchester cruises and one night seeing the late Dave Grady with a 57 ford do a drag race by the M1 against a highly tuned sleeper 100E. Stopping the traffic whilst they did burnouts in front of bemused drivers being held up and seeing them launch hard down the dual carriageway. These were simpler times where fun was not a dirty word.

That's so cool. Hot rod on BBS style split rims is a something I don't think i've seen before.

Yep, a superb post, I recognise some of those early 80's cars as I used to be an avid reader of Custom Car and Street Machine as a kid. Still fancy getting a Rod one day but it will be bought or built for me as I am a ham fisted f*ckwit :-)

Phil Rutherford's 33 roadster - it certainly wasn't built in 1972 though, 1982 maybe! Have to say I preferred it without the big graphics...

Have we had this yet?

Built by Dave Rothwell, one of the finest hot rod builders in the country IMHO. Still enjoy looking at this at shows even though it's been around for a good few years.

Up for sale too I believe.

Sad news, some pages back we covered the start of hot rodding and mentioned the legendary Pierson coupe, sadly Dick Pierson passed away last week, I suspect that the magazines will run articles when new issues come out.

Found a video of Johnny Martinez's pickup via rodauthority.com : http://youtu.be/ojcRkKJ_F90

Worth posting another shot of the Pierson Bros Coupe.

Lovely period colour shot of the coupe on the salt, or possibly one of the dry lakes looking at the surface, behind Bob Pierson's customised '36 Ford Coupe which they used as a tow car for the race car.
Bobs '36 Ford also still exists today, and was relatively recently restored, albeit painted red IIRC, rather than the white it was back then.
