Well, it really depends from what I have to do daily with my cars and from where I live. I think 3 should be enough but 4 or 5 really covers many more needs...

I don't think true all-rounders exist for me. I own a F11 525d estate, it can carry enough luggage and people, it is frugal and comfy, powerful enough for motorway trips but...try to park it in a crowded Italian jammed city with just few small surface parkings available. And on a decent road...it is really boring to drive.
I also own a Panda and a Elise (downsized from a V8 Vantage...) but I think a brand new Boxter GTS would find its space...after the summer.

I have only 2 garages but 4 covered spaces in the courtyard...so there is still some spaces to fill.

Well we had three between the two of us but never used one (the MR2 was just sat there as if the weather was good it was always TVR time).. So we sold her. But I do want another MR2 now............

Currently 3 -

2013 VW Golf 2.0GT (my daily)
2014 VW Golf 1.6SE (wifes daily)
Ron Champion Locost (weekend/summer/track toy)

Thankfully I've the drive space - the toy lives in the garage while the two Golfs live on the drive.

As usual this has turned into a willy waving competition, no one asked anyone to list their cars...

I think 2 is probably enough.

1. Megane 250 Cup. Great daily driver. Comfortable and fast.
2. Caterham 140 "Supersport" - track and weekend

The other half has a Corsa too. I'd like to see her trade it in eventually for something a little bigger that we could perhaps tow the Caterham with.

I was constrained to 3/4 by space issues until recently. Now I'm basically unconstrained.

I have come to realise that an all-rounder is the worst possible type of car for me. Lots of contrast and variety keeps me content. When it starts to have a negative impact on your finances or if it makes your home look like a dealer or a scrap yard then you probably have too many though.

We've got 2 sensible but aging cars at the moment, plus 1 fairly quick sports car that is roadworthy and 1 classic sports car that currently isn't roadworthy. We've got another sensible car coming next week to add some youthfullness to our daily drivers. I fancy something GTish. And maybe a Defender for morbid fun.

You really are an unimaginative lot - why do you have to keep all your cars where you live, constrained by the number of parking spaces at your house?

You don't, do you? Think about it...

I don't, but I can. Plus, hardly anyone wants to drive to some remote locked garage to get another car out to go for a drive.

I know loads of people who do just that! I walk twenty five minutes to my lock up.

I use the same formula but with N being equal to the number of parking spaces I have....

There's always 1 that I have to have a shuffle to get at wink

There are loads of people who don't find time to drive a toy car sat a few paces away due to work and family commitments etc. An hour's round trip on foot just to get to the car and back would absolutely garuntee many such cars including my own toy cars would never see light of day until sold again.

A gentleman can never have too many cars.
That is the only answer. The more you have the more little sub catagories you have.

I started with xsara vts so my fun daily affordable car.

then got a clio diesel so i had my
1. daily clio
2. fun car xsara

then got the noble so had
1.daily clio
2.track stripped xsara
3.fun special car noble

then got a z3 so had

1.daily clio
2.track stripped xsara
3.fun special noble
4.nice day daily/ back up fun car z3

I then had a change of circumstances and went the other way as the fleet got smaller their catagories changed as to what i use them for.

Now the z3 is my daily, fun, hoon car.

Currently three in the house hold, will be four when i get a kit car, i dont count my work van- its not mine.

Datsun weekend toy and a Clio for me and the better half has a new Civic.

I have wondered (not for too long) if getting a kit car as well as the above was greedy.

What ever makes you happy and you can afford is the answer to the original question- you only live once, enjoy it!

One car and a van for work is perfect.

I couldn't justify the extra cost for other cars when mines does everything I want.

Max (1,Min (N+1, m-1) ) where N is the number of cars owned and m is the number of parking spaces owned. Ir works for me.

In my eyes, 3 would be the perfect number for me.

  • 1: Full Fat Range Rover Overfinch. For turning up to parties and special occasions.
  • 2: Cheap to run thing for daily use (like a Golf for the shopping and moving crap about)
  • 3: A nice motorway barge (An estate, for long distance trips or for the commute if it's a long motorway one).
If space and funds allow, then I'd have another car, like an MX-5 or a fun to drive convertible for those lovely days where you'd enjoy having the roof down.
