Plasti-dip car respray
Discussion
I plastidipped some wheels a few months ago. Did a few coats matt black and then a couple of coats of the 'metalizer' so it's given them a shadow chrome effect. They looked great initially however I soon noticed that keeping them clean is a lot more difficult than normal paint. Plastidip seems to absorb a bit of dirt/grime so you'll probably find the finish on your car will fade after a few washes. To be honest a wrap would be a much better option for a whole car however that is obviously more expensive. So to conclude I think it's ok stuff but doesn't really live up to the hype you see in youtube clips, etc (expected really I guess).
I had a vinyl wrapped vehicle before. It was parked under a tree for a bit and that damaged the finish irreparably. If the plasti-dip does not even beat vinyl then it must be pretty awful. There's a chap from www.saabsforum.com who has done a 900 convertible with plasti-dip.
I think the finish looks different to paint but reasonable.

Hi Kris
Thanks... Well - the prep work is 70% of the job but is much less than the prep work required when liquid spraying due to the fact that only the seals touching the paint work need to be precise, any gaps don't need to be precise as any excess can simply be peeled off post spray... We preped and sprayed almost two cars in one day which is pretty good going... It was a long day but happy with the result!

Hi nick, finally had some time to look at this topic!
For people asking, i am the one who sprayed the mustang and the saab together with nick.
In comparison to Vinyl it holds just as well, maybe even better. It also peels much easier then vinyl and can be applied in onde day. I did vinyl on my old MX5 so i know what i am talking about.
On my old audi, it was on it more then a year. Take it through the carwash every month, no problem. Also no problems with trees sticky stuff.
For me Plastidip over vinyl any time!

"So after our final 2 coats it did not relictivy as spraying all on the same day. So to get a straight line when removing the tape was a little more challenging."
Can you explain that... "relictivy" must be some kind of typo, but I can't figure out what it's meant to be?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
