Compare the nearly two tonnes of the E31 with the 1470kg of the M635CSi that preceded it.
Where did all the weight come from? I assume they're years apart in crash protection and all that jazz?
V12 V's straight 6 for a kick off
Engine weights don't contribute much to that difference, those sixes were cast iron blocked, as opposed to the alloy block V8s and V12s...

M70 V12: 155kg
M73 V12: 150kg
S70 V12: 165kg

M88 & M88/3 I6: 146kg
S38 I6: 151kg

M60 V8: 146kg
M62 V8: 140kg.

However, park one next to the other and you soon see where the extra mass comes from, doubly so when you start opening doors and so on. Everything about an Eight feels more substantial than a Six, electric motors for just about everything help add weight too. An Eight is very close, if not heavier than the equivalently engined (E32) Seven Series from which they were derived, rather than the Five Series derived Six.

If it's any help to people trying to guess the price now...

This car was for sale about 8-9 years ago for £55K.

An 840 is circa 200lbs heavier than an equivalent engined E38 7-Series...never mind an E32.

I didn't beard it up in my initial post, just went from memory after looking up engine weights, but the above prompted a look on Carfolio and found:

E31 850Ci: 1,955kg (840i: 1,895kg)
E31 850CSi: 1,975kg
E32 750i: 1,800kg (740i: 1,790kg)
E38 750i: 2,055kg (740i: 1,895kg)

(Seven weights are for SWB models)

Which places the two you mention at identical kerb weights, but yes, they are all porkers. hehe

IIRC they run about 60kg just in batteries

I recall being at Donington back in '92 in Sytner hospitality and they had the first RHD Alpina 850 5.7 there in the car park. They made a big deal about it being the most expensive BMW sold in the UK to that date. I think it was Estoril blue? They also kept banging on about the carbon fibre bonnet. Anyway, got a passenger ride and the performance was incredible. The surge of torque was unbelievable!

I'm guessing this will be hugely overpriced?

I owned a 1994 csi for a few years and always wanted one of these (I had previously owned lesser c2 2.7). I only ever saw one once so they must be rare .

I assume the extra power would make the chassis even more iffy as the csi was bloody scary as far as stability was concerned , but it would enhance the already torquey engine I'm sure

they did a 6.0 l too. This was the one I saw.

Correct, the 6.0 was only fitted to the E38 7 Series and came with a 5 speed Auto only and was based on the M73 V12. The 5.7 was a modified M division S70 and came, as standard, with a 6 Speed Manual and was only fitted to the 8 Series. Power for the 5.7 was 416BHP and 570NM and 430BHP and 600NM for the 6.0.

Interesting read, seems like all these 8series cars are on the way up in value even from when this thread started!

Alas too many parts for these are NLA (No Longer Available). Not a car to drive more than a few hundred miles a year.
