The Atom looked a handful. I can`t imagine it`s easy getting heat into the tyres, even on a day like that.

Out of the slow corners, Dale just left me for dead. once we were up to speed in the medium to high speed stuff, I could keep up, but to say that was his first lap in an unfamiliar car, I thought he drove it bloody well to be honest.

I`ve owned the Golf for a lot longer, whilst this was my first trip to the ring in it for a couple of years and the first since I added boost over the winter, I`m still comfortable driving it. Boost was kept low as I needed reliability. Next trip MAY may see it turned up a touch. biglaugh

Glorious weather, a bit of traffic to make it interesting and a lap with someone you know so you can press on.. Brilliant ! . Roll on DN11 hehe

did you forget to connect the lead to the shift lights on the steering wheel?

I had a go in a s/c atom at a 6th gear experience day. The instructor wouldn't let you get on the throttle till you were out of a corner and pointing straight. He said the handling was very twitchy, and even he spun one during his first laps. No wonder Dale was apprehensive.

^^ It looked frightening both from driver's seat and from behind (from Golf footage). And a lot of slower traffic too (!) Scary stuff.
Can't help thinking that a well set-up R400 would be a much better, more planted drive all round... (?)

Dale, I remember going out as a pax in your Yaris and being scared. Over 10 years ago.

Think I'd make a better passenger now.

Looks like you have to be such a good driver to get the best out of one of these, so tail happy! Know I feel a lot better for not keeping up with whoosher when he is on track

At around 4.50 into the video I bet the passengers clack-valve was going 'sixpence-half a crown' to say the very least.
Very twitchy IMHO, and having seen the Golf , I'd rather have that in my garage; innocuous shonky--looking VW, a bit of a Q-car.
Excellent driving, especially the above mentioned dabs of oppo!

Splendid video, absolutely riveting, but what on earth was the Golf running to overtake you like that?

I've always quite liked the atom. This video makes me so glad I have a caterham, the atom seems to handle like a barn door!

It's a secret, but suffice to say.....

Another thumbs up for the following golf, you expect the Atom to wag its arse around and be loud but not for a fairly typical looking* hatchback to be catching it with relative ease!

(* I know its not typical but seems every Golf or Astra around here had an accident in a Demon Tweaks warehouse)

The problem with those type of cars is they always feel faster than they are.

The GT3's proved that.

Is that a problem? As long as it feels fast! For me anyway smile

That Golf has had years of homebrew development, Nige is a genius and quite inventive when it comes to spannering, concentrating on handling before going wild with power.

Having had first hand experience of actually driving an Atom, I can tell you they are fast. Very fast.

That must have been a great experience, but I wonder how much the Atom could be improved (it looked quite a handful) if the suspension and geometry were tweaked a bit.

That Golf must have a very good setup and a very good driver.
