I've been a parent for a couple of years now (now have two kids) and still yet to find the perfect family car (I think).

Money no object, what would be your ultimate family car and what's the best family car that you have owned (if any)? Lets assume 2 kids and 2 adults, so that you're not "forced" to buy a 7-seater.

Is it this?

or this?

or am I completely off?

This is the closest that I have got.

Big boot, comfortable, 2.5 TD, so quick enough most of the time but still 40mpg, long fuel range, only cost 700 quid, so not too precious about it (not as fast or fun as the WRX wagon I had though) frown Thinking along these lines, the venerable Peugeot 406 diesel estate would offer most of the same qualities and probably better mpg and lower running costs?

Money no object. Probably a range rover.

I'd take an rs6 or xf-rs sportbrake personally...

Porsche 911
Land Rover Defender
BMW M3
Maserati GranSport
Jaguar XKR
Audi RS5

All of the above would preferably be in Convertible guise, maybe Defender exempt

A lot of fast cars above, why would you want to go fast with your family in the car?

Just because a car has a lot of power doesn't mean you use it all the time controlled use - also this is a petrolhead website where performance is higher on the radar than Joe public.

Plus of course the kudos your kids will have when daddy drops them off in a top end car v white goods motoring.

1. Don't always have family in it.
2. Sometimes kids like acceleration.
3. It's nice to have extra horses just incase.
4. Aren't we petrolheads?
5. You can look down on poor people.
6. You don't have to go full throttle everywhere.
7. May end up on the autobahn.

Citroen C4 grand Picasso. *With leather. The leather enables you to easily clean up when the kids have spewed over the back seats after eating too much chocolate, (which has been stored in the huge door bins) whilst watching In The Night Garden on the in car DVD screens on the headrests. Add to this a full length sunroof and a decent safety rating, and you have the perfect family car. smile

OK money might be an object but you would have to spend so much more for not much more.

I think its the Maserati Granturismo Mc Stradale MC2013 (the 4 seater version).

Watch Harry Metcafes video on the Aston Martin Rapide, he compares it to his Granturismo, the Maserati had bags of room to spare, Harry is 6 foot something and he said his 6foot son could sit happily behind him. That is very impressive.

It looks stunning, it has so much character, it sounds stunning, they are brilliant to drive, I cant think of a car I would rather drive daily.
Your children wont get bullied at school as the other children will all want you to let them have a ride.

Although if you have a 110k family hack your children's peers might be rather wealthy as well...

Any way you need a 8000rpm V8 to drown out 'are we nearly there yet' from the back...

As a family wagon it has to do the following for me.

1. fit us all in, that is me, wife, daughter, son and dog.
2. Not give a st who eats in it and if they make a mess, it always cleans up.
3. Not give a st if everyone gets in covered in mud, it always cleans up.
4. Not give a st if dirty bikes etc. are thrown in the back, it always cleans up.
5. Have to be able to throw bikes etc. in the back as I am far too lazy for roof bars or bike racks.
6. Needs to be comfy for everyone so if we are in it all day we don't all start getting irritated.
7. Decent sound system - I need to switch off!

For me the current 02 plate ML ticks all the boxes, and it is old enough and cheap enough for me not to worry about any of the above. It is the perfect family car.
