What a brute - a beautiful car!

Minor point but I don't like the dash and sat Nav binnacle - shame they couldn't get it curved towards the centre of the car.
It does look rather awkward- a word which doesn't fit badly with the remainder of the package...

The day a diesel ends up in a CL will mark the beginning of the end for great cars.
I think it would suit a big diesel.
Presumably you think a big diesel would suit a DB9, Bentley CGT, or perhaps even a Rolls Royce Wraith too?

These top end GT cars deserve a nice big petrol. They've never, ever made a diesel CL. The whole point of a CL is ultimate in smoothness and refinement. A diesel doesn't do it as well as a petrol.
No, just the Merc.

Just because they have never made a diesel CL doesn't mean they shouldn't. Diesel engines have changed.. For instance I'd choose the 4.4 diesel Range Rover over the petrol.
It does. The initials mean Luxury Coupe and I assure you they want it to remain luxurious that’s why they don’t, (and haven’t), in recent years made it in anything lower than a V8. A modern diesel may be a wonder of technology but relative to a multi cylinder petrol and from a luxury point of view, (read NVH), it is absolutely and I repeat absolutely, horrid. I want my luxury coupe to be refined from inside and out.
If you would choose the diesel over the petrol it’s probably because you are being sensible, not because you really value refinement?

Could not disagree with you more if I tried vis a vis the interior! Absolutely wonderful cabin IMO, great design and materials. Just like the saloon, which has one of the finest interiors I've ever sat in furnishing it.
But why does it look like they've put a hand grenade in a tin of beige paint and pulled the pin? Wreeks of Farrah slacks and gabbicci tank tops! Do rich people really like beige?

I do. I Iike any interior except black. It’s so dark and dingy. Black carpetting, black dashboard & console and black seats - add to that tinted windows - seem to be all you get a choice of these days. Horrible.
Admittedly the Mercedes colour palette is a little sparse right now, a but chestnut brown or maroon red interior would work for me nicely.
I do think that the analog effect digital dash is terrible though.

Most of those supercars hold some reasonable percentage of their original purchase value.

Any of these Merc (and BMW for that matter) super saloons / coupes with an enormous V12 and all the gadgets imaginable depreciate like hell.

You have to have a serious wedge to walk into a dealership and walk out with one of these ordered half an hour later and not give a damn about the fact it's worth 10s of thousands less the second you get your mitts on the keys.

This. Other than fuel economy there is no reason to choose a diesel engine over this.

My current next car is as below

And the new one would make a suitable replacement in 4 years time.
Of course this could all change within 10 minutes of looking through the classifieds smile

I think these big luxury coupes will transition straight to electric power in the future. Loads of torque on demand and amazing NVH.

That's assuming someone can fix the range problem....

The Merc coupes are lovely relaxing places to be. The fact they depreciate at an insane rate is a great thing. It means I get to waft about in a mint used one as my daily for the same price as a korean st box.

You know when you absolutely, positively, must get to the South of France as quickly as possible because there has been some fresh snow in Chamonix?

This is the car for that.
Ordell Robbie: CL-65. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to beat every motherf****r in the room to Chamonix, accept no substitutes.
Kudos to anybody who knows what movie this is from. smile
Also I agree with others about the CL design. I think it has aged well and it's still a handsome car. The rear lights date it the most but that's how they did them back then. I think it's a massive improvement on the 'big box' design of the previous CL and it looks much nicer than the S class it's based on.
Will cost a heck of a lot to run though so it's really a weekends and holidays type of car now.

Actually on reflection I think a diesel will appeal to the rich who are looking for the sensation of being in a mini cab.

Except current Rollers are massive, butt-ugly boxes with a coefficient of drag similar to my house. If I wanted a big box on wheels, I'd get an '80s Volvo.

Re: the supercars, I think the whole point of this car is to be both insanely fast and relatively discreet. I think it's a fantastic looking car (and has restored my faith in M-B's styling department), though I have to agree that the old W215 CL is one of the best looking cars ever made. Not sure I'd buy this new one even if I had the money, but a W215 CL65 AMG is definitely on my dream garage wish list!

Absurd comment.

I've been fortunate enough to have been a passenger for a while in a CL63 AMG which was absolutely fantastic. The quality of the switch gear etc was really classy and a step up even from some other very expensive cars I've been in.

I've also sat in a Rolls-Royce Phantom and a Wraith. It blows the CL apart. If you can't understand WHY someone would rather a Phantom or Wraith over something like this you miss the point. I can understand why you wouldn't want a Rolls-Royce over one of these, but to effectively say these are better is daft. At what the Rolls-Royce is supposed to do, it is better in my opinion.

155 limiter would irk on this. Very high speed in extreme comfort is the raison d'etre of this car surely?
Have you ever driven a car at 155mph? Not being able to drive any faster is not something that would 'irk' me, ever. Not having a limiter is only worth as much as pub bragging rights, and arguably, having a CL65 in the first place kind of exempts you from needing them anyway.
