Local dealer who we currently have a car from, and use for servicing, have, over the last couple of weeks, written, emailed and texted me about their upcoming VIP sales event.

As it happens, I'd like to buy another of their cars for a family member.

So I emailed them at the advised email address. Bounced.

Emailed a reply to their email (it was from a named person). No response.

Phoned them on the "hotline". Rang for ages then went to answerphone.

Generally, how popular are events like this? The communications all insist it's a closed event. If I just turn up will they continue to ignore me?

It's just marketing bks.

The level of response you've had from the dealer so far tells you all you need to know about them.

If you're interested in buying a car why not just go to the showroom rather than waiting for a sales event?

The timing is co-incidental, really.

I'm motivated by the letter which tell me that this will be no ordinary event - it's a VIP event!

Am I going to be disappointed?

Read up on and respect the Sales 'process' before you go. Otherwise you risk being guilty of time wasting.

Almost certainly.

It's just an angle to get people through the door. 'Exclusivity' makes folk feel important and valued as a 'special' customer. I'm in marketing so wouldn't call it bks but it's not going to be A list, put it that way.

Unless it's a Ferrari dealership? In which case ignore what I just said.

Perhaps you could drop in on your way to dump some garden waste, make sure to drive an old heap of a car and see if you gain respect from the sales staff. If you do, return later in full morning suit to close the deal.

I'm amazed that there are still people who fall for this kind of bks and I sell cars at a main dealer; we don't do these events by the way.

Thanks. frown

They've rung back now and I have an appointment.

Never made an appointment to buy a car in my life. I had to have an appointment in case lots of people just turn up. "Isn't is a closed event?" "Well, we can't chase people away."

I keep getting invitations from a local Toyota dealer I once bought a car off. It's just an attempt to sell the st colours and ex-demos that nobody wants.

IMO avoid VIP events, there's probably going to be loads of people there and as a consequence the sales guys have less time to spend with you.

Thing I've wondered about these events is if you actually turned up on VIP day without an appointment but told them you wanted to place an order on a new car today but today ONLY would they turn you away?

The way they black out all the windows and stuff is most amusing though I have to say but if the customer likes the VIP treatment and it sells cars then I guess its all good business!

As far as I know every customer is a VIP to a business that wants a sale. Mine certainly are. To imagine you're a VIP outside of that environment is a bit strange.

Some of the 'parties' are pretty cool! Since he was a valued customer, my dad got invited to a launch party of the E60 5 series. So he took me. We went and looked a bit, then had a drool over an unregistered E39 M5 they had.

These events are ok if the dealer has the exact car you want, they want to sell, you want to buy it.

A dealer I worked at had an event, and i got paid to do test drives for it

run and managed by http://www.rhinovipevent.co.uk/

closed event is rubbish, turn up unannounced and "we'll see if we can get you in" (really, go grab a vip pass out of the spare pass box)

appointments is because they try to operate the event like a production line, 45 mins with the salesman, 15 mins test drive with a driver

you'll receive a call before the event pre-qualifying you and your requirements, budget, part ex etc which is all passed to the salesman before you arrive.

the cars, well, discounts were genuine, its a unit shifting event more than a profit smasher. but expect little movement on the price

as said, ok if you know they have the car you want, not so good for browsing or haggling
