Still think it is a shame Audi didn't persist and develop the A2.

Well ahead of the game and I think it wouldn't take much to actually make it modern.....

New LED lights, front and rear.

New dashboard/door cards in style of A1/new TT.

New seats.

Latest gen engines, brakes etc and hybrid if possible.

Job done, don't mess with the shape. I would love to see a Audi student project - 'Refreshing the A2 for 2014'.

A2 was inspired by VW auto 2000, also an i3 diesel capable of 3.8l/100km in 1981 and a concept car found in all aerodynamic textbooks of the period.
Auto "2000" came out about that time so good name! The A2 failed commercially because it was not available in resale non metallic choc Brown. Fact. Hurumph.

I really like the look of these tbh, I think they have aged really well.
If I was in the market for a small car I'd be buying one of these.

And that Kamm tail shape carried on with the modern eco/hybrid cars like the Insight, Prius and CRZ

I loved these when they came out and they still look very modern today. As the article says it was well ahead of its time. They've always held onto their value very well so quite impressed to see this for below £1k! Wouldn't have any worries about the EML either as the 1.4 16v is generally quite a solid little engine. Wondering if this one might have originally been Audi UK with the OU52 number plate... scratchchin

2014 and some manufacturers are still designing and introducing cars that are worse than this, many would say the Audi A1 is worse (like me) but at least it is cheaper for Audi to make.
A 4 leather 4 seat only TDi with a panoramic roof, buy one today (it will never dip to £1000) and happy motoring.
Future classic.

I've had two, the 1.6FSI was VAG's first direct injection engine and suffered from fouling of the induction system, and it was only finally sorted by an old-fashioned de-coke. The 3 pot deseasel sounds like four navvies banging a pick into the ground with their shovels at cold, but is economical and characterful in use. There is the usual Audi poor quality and poorly specified damping, but that can be sorted quite cheaply, and door hinges break.

On the upside, its a properly small car that can still carry 4 adults in comfort, and has the best sorted handling and steering of any Audi of the time bar the R8.

I'm amazed at all the love for this horrid thing. We had one at work as a pool car from new. Bits fell off it from the very beginning and half the time we seemed to have a courtesy car as the pool car since the A2 was being mended. As I recall, when you switched the wipers on, the whole car physically shook in time with the movement. That's never happened to me in any car before or since.

Admittedly that was only one example but it was enough to put me off for good.
I completely agree, my week with an A2 saw exactly the same along with flimsy trim that resulted in a broken sun visor and glovebox handle... it was only one car, but it formed an opinion in my mind which is at odds with many of the comments here!

A2 looks great imo.

Stick a private plate on it and I expect a significant majority of the public would suspect it a brand new car.

I was tempted to buy the gf one to use as a commuter/home visit (she's a GP) car.

I've owned mine for about 9 years and had to replace the brake light switch, the flasher unit and the ARB Bushes. Nothing else which is remarkable for 9 years.

Sure it has its quirks, the ride isn't good, especially on the sport models 17" wheels and 205/40 tyres and front visibility is hampered by the A pillars but nothing a slight move of the head solves

Got one for the missus almost exactly a year ago. It not an SE, just a base model 1.6 FSI Colour Storm with climate and fogs. No sports suspension and 15" wheels. I wouldn't want it any firmer, I can well believe the horror stories of the ride on bigger wheels.

Cost us nothing but petrol. An absolute star buy.

It doesn't have a fuel computer so have been calculating tank to tank with Fuelly

Have always used V-Power and Momentum without fail.

Is this the first time you've noticed different folk liking different things?

Welcome to life, it's like that.

Not sure completely why, but the base model and plastic arches above etc reminds me of the old Mk 1 XR2, I actually prefer it for looks smile

The arches and indeed the whole front wings are plastic on all of them, just not black.

Stick a private plate on a 20yr old £500 Jag and a significant majority of the public would suspect a lottery millionaire

Colour storm wasn't a base model, it was a special edition. The grey arches etc was deliberate
