Has a nice bit of class to it the A2, still manages to look modern now, does not look like a car from last century.

I didn't like these when they came out, but as time has passed I have come to admire them.

I wouldn't want to own one though.

Wasn't there some kind of joke along the lines of Renault getting word that VW were working on a 3L Lupo and thought they should be making something of a similar nature and that was what led to the Clio 3.0 V6?

Good call.

My mum is looking to replace her 2010 Jazz with something a bit faster. I've suggested the usual gamut of Polo's / Fiestas / a larger cc Jazz with no luck but a late model A2 might be good bet and with some cash left over possibly.

Interesting cars but the worst variant and potentially has an eye wateringly expensive problem.

A shed fail, what next the 1K Boxster that just happens to have a blown engine?

To be fair the appeal is largely in the geek value. Its not a car that makes you stare at it longingly whilst dreaming of the open road. However, I suppose it qualifies for shed.

One of my own favourite cars of all time, so sensible, so well built, so far ahead of its it rivals . Still nothing to match it a decade on, I've enjoyed the ownership of two examples, and keep thinking about buying another and spending some time and money on it, effectively undertaking a complete restoration, making it like new again, even painting it a non Audi colour, could all be done for far less than the price of a new steel bodied hatch .

It's amazing how many common parts there are between the A2 & the Polo - suspension, engine, exhaust etc. A CEL wouldn't worry me on one of these - quick plug in with a code reader (undoubtedly done) probably reveals a host of codes, coil packs & cat's are the favourite source. Bit of a surprise to see one of these up for SOTW though, I still perceive them as 'quality', although I have neither driven one nor been in one.
Does the numberplate indicate the first owner was Audi UK?

Timeless classic - narrow body, seen plenty on Italian roads - perfect for the restricted width roads.

I had one up until last October. Can't really fault them TBH, other than the sport suspension being hilariously bad and mine had electrical gremlins. Still love them. Best owners club out there as well, FYI

If you're Mike Brewer you CAN get a Boxster with a suspect dodgy gearbox for £1k that does only need a oil change.

Do remember that there are plenty of people who are very capable of fixing their own cars and aren't scared by a ECU warning light so buying the cheapest example on the market and investing a few hours of their time can be very worthwhile.

Plus although it has an Audi badge on the front you can still buy parts from many suppliers who sell OE parts at a reasonable discount!

I had a 1.6 FSI for a bit. A very good car apart from the gearbox going south, replaced under warranty.

Wow! Never expected to see one of these in SOTW.

I've always admired these for their quirkiness and this one strikes me as a veritable bargain if one were in the market for a shed. As someone else has said, stick a dateless plate on it and many would be hard-pressed to know how old it is.

I worked at a place where the office manager had one of these. It was her second and she absolutely loved it. Had her head turned by a nearly-new Mk1 TT when our MD insisted she changed but she instantly regretted it. This was back in the days when the A1 was mooted to be a replacement along the same lines as the A2 so she was eagerly awaiting that. I imagine the A1 left her a little disappointed in the end!

Bugger, I REALLY thought Mike Brewer actually bought cars for as cheap as he reckons, now you've burst my bubble! (He laughs as he remembers the episode where he bought a TR6; "how much are you asking?" "£12k" "I'll give you £8.5k" "Okay".... Yeah yeah yeah Mike, go back to eating all the

Anyway, I still admire the A2, it never fails to amaze me that car manufacturers seem to have regressed rather than progressed in the intervening years with regards to vehicle weight, economy and fitness for purpose....

EML lights on these can be caused by nothing more than an aftermarket Lambda sensor being fitted and not being recognised by the Audi ECU.

Run one for a year now as station hack and school run.....bloody marvellous thing and as title suggests way ahead of its time.
