Looking at a facelift E 220 Cdi Estate, around a 07/08 plate. Are these under powered for what is quite a big car? Should I really be looking at the E 280 instead. Any one with any advice on these? Thanks

Depends what you want. My father has one which I have driven many times and whilst it is no sports car it is plenty sufficient for every day use. He tows with it also and it is no problem.

If you want something better at the traffic light GP get a 280, if not it would be OK, imo

Yes, just every day use for work really. Will be doing circa 20k per year. Won't be towing with it, just general use. Thanks

Our second car is an '09 C350d. Even with the C, I cannot imagine much less in the power dept. -- in the E, forget it. Cars that can't get out of their own way seem rather pointless if you enjoy driving.

It's as quick as a W126 380SE with the petrol V8. It does 0-60 in under nine seconds and more than 140 mph top speed. Anyone who can drive at all can make safe and comfortable progress with that level of performance.

Excellent post.

Unless you want to compete in traffic light GP's you will find it more than adequate in the power dept. They have a good wallop of torque, enough to make everyday driving very easy and relaxing.

You won't miss power. It's adequate.

Complete hokum, whilst the 220D is never going to set the world on fire, it is more than adequate for everyday driving.

On the Autobahns in Deutchland maybe, but not relevant to good old blighty.

A friend of mine had an E220 Cdi and loved it. Did about 70k in 3 years in it - never moaned about needing more power.

I bought one last year for Dad to run around in for work..... A new E220 CDi Estate. Depending on what you want from a car, it's perfectly adequate.

It sits at a three figure cruising speed across Europe quite happily, even when fully loaded up. It won't ever set the world on fire, but it is very capable.

What a load of bull.

My S40 1.6D with all of 105bhp must be unimaginably slow then!

It is.

But it does depend what you are measuring against - I personally wouldn't own a large car with much less than 250-300bhp.

The OP needs to drive a 220 and judge for themselves.

My wife has an A220 and I think it is a little slow in the A, so in a big E the only feeling of performance is the limited powerband.

It goes well enough if you're not in a hurry, and more than well enough on a motorway. What I would say is that it's as rough as a badgers arse, so decide if you can put up with that too!

I've got a 2014 E220 CDI - had it from new and done 2,000 miles in it so far. It's no rocket ship by any stretch but I find it quick enough for every day use and not really 'under powered' at all. I may get mine chipped or remapped or whatever it's called as I think these can go up to the E250 CDI levels of power quite easily and cheaply.

The only thing I would say is that the engine note is unrefined and it pushing on in the lower gears can be quite noisy. Not so noticeable in the higher gears (it has 7 speed auto). I did 5.5 hours driving in mine on Sat from Dorset to Wales and back and it is a good high speed cruiser.

Ive owned both an E200 CGI petrol estate and E220 CDI diesel estate, very similar BHP and figures on paper, the diesel was lovely, the petrol horrible.

My point? In a big heavy car like an E Class torque is king, the E220 CDI has about 420NM from memory (more than the A220 CDI so not directly comparable) and is a great cruiser or load lugger.

I'd taken it around the UK on holidays and performance was always up for safe multiple car overtakes due to the low down grunt.

I miss mine and would have another in a heartbeat.

2013 E220 CDi (so 170 bhp; I think the W221s had 150 with similar weight).

Plenty of torque, no rocket ship but a more than adequate cruiser capable of changing speed noticeably within a few seconds at any speed that won't get you an instant ban.

If you're coming from something like an E63, it will feel slow, but it's a perfectly adequate daily driver.

Just to add, I had the 2008 W211 series so the model you are looking at OP, its a different engine than the current twin turbo but has very similar bhp around 170, and at that age will be facelift with the reliable 5 speed auto.

Avantgarde with full leather is a nice spec - dark black wood, xenons, heated seats, parktronic etc.
