Well the saga of trying to find the GF a new car continues....

She now doesn't think the Civic type R is for her (can't see herself in one) and has realised that she can't afford a 1/3 series coupe/vert - 6 cylinder for reliability but pushing running costs....

We've now moved onto the scirocco - 2008/9 with under 80k, manual and petrol (town driving and know the autos/1.4's are trouble). Anything to look out for - any resident used car salesmen have stock if they are generally problem free? - Blue/Black/Silver

I've had mine for over 3 years now (2.0 tsi petrol with 6 speed dsg box) and so far, all I've had to pay for is servicing, mot's and tyres
they are very good cars,
cheap to run and fairly economical (I average high 20's mpg with mostly town driving and can easily get 40+ on a run).
Mines on 19" wheels which does make the ride a little bit harsh, so if this is a concern maybe look for one with 18's.
I would definitely recommend getting 1 with rear park sensors, as the view out the back is not so good and can make parking a little tricky,
also mine has the sunroof which seems like a waste of money as it only tilts, but it adds a lot of light, and on the ones I looked at without it the interior seamed quite gloomy + I think it improves the appearance especially the lighter colours like white and viper green
Mine also has leather and sat nav, which are nice to have but probably not worth a big premium.

If you need to carry extra passengers, access to the rear can be a bit tight, but once in it's pretty roomy in the back even for adults and the seats are pretty comfortable.
The boots not that big, and the opening can be an awkward shape for some items, but it's more than big enough for the weeks shopping + the back seats fold for more space.

If your interested in it as a drivers car, well I find it very capable,
mine with the 210 brake engine gets to 60 in just over 6 secs so is still able to keep up with most of the modern hot hatch brigade,
it corners very well with the right tyres (mine came fitted with dunlops which didn't suit the car at all so when it was time to change I went with goodyear asymmetric 2's which made a world of difference).

The chassis is very good and the steering, while not providing loads of feedback is still a pleasure to use and on the whole it's a rewarding and fun car to drive.
the only downsides i can think of are that it it does suffer a few rattles from the dash and surrounding trim but nothing too annoying, and the dsg box, while brilliant has a habit of changing up thru the gears very quickly, sometimes more quickly than I'd like, but i just tend to use the paddles if I need a bit more control, also the brakes can take a bit of getting used to, the first time I used them I felt a bit of a prat coming to a very abrupt halt as their not very progressive, but I soon got used to them so it's not really an issue.

Hi there,

I had one of the first cars back in 2009. Kept it for 2 years and covered about 30,000 miles. It was a 2.0 TDi GT manual in white with the 18" wheels.

For me not a bad all round car but the suspension was atrocious. It had switchable suspension but neither setting was right for the car and it just banged, clattered and bumped on the slightest surface. The engine, equipment etc was all good but for me the suspension really put me off

When it came to sourcing my new company car recently I gave the Scirocco a wide berth, went for a new Beetle instead. Same chassis but with suspension that is a world away from the Scirocco.

Maybe I just had a bad one ?

Regards

Tim

I suppose it depends very much on what your used to or prefer.

I know when i first got mine I had spent the last few years driving a mk2 focus so it did feel very stiff in comparison,
also any bumps etc are transmitted straight to the drivers seat in the scirocco which may not be to many peoples liking
in fact riding on 19's means I am constantly on the lookout for potholes etc for fear of the damage they may do and the thump I feel when I hit one, which in the focus wouldn't have been given much thought,
having said that I actually quite like the stiff ride in the scirocco, I think it suits the car and on the whole I find it pretty comfortable, I do tend to keep the acc in comfort mode most of the time though and only use the sport setting on odd occasions just to feel the difference.
my wife's car (a tiguan r line) was criticised in many reviews We looked at before ordering one for having a harsh ride, so I was quite surprised when it got delivered and we took it for a drive just how comfortable it felt to me, which just goes to show how people can have differing opinions of such things.
or maybe you did just have a bad one biggrin
