A tough one for me, but I have always lusted after a Clio Williams (1), I know they aren't the greatest, or the fastest and all that stuff that matters, but for some reason I just want want want one - so that pips all the others to the post for me.

It needs to be graded on a points system

0-60 time
bhp
weight
mpg
what wheel drive
handling
practicality
reliability
fun
and
price

someone needs to make a kick ass spreadsheet with some drop downs for grading - not sure how you could quantify what points for 'fun' but for facts you it would be easy..

Example -

what wheel drive

FWD - 1 point
RWD - 3 points
AWD - 5 points
Looks needlessly complex to me; let me simplify that for you.

1 Question: Do I enjoy it?
Yes = +1000 points, No =-1000 points

Everything else doesn't really matter, especially silly numbers that are only really useful if you brag about the car in a pub.

Been doing some proper test drives today and the 4 cars I drove were the A45AMG, the Golf R, the Megane 275 and the M235i.
The Megane's engine felt dated and did not rev like a modern day turbo should and was fairly slow. It would be good on a track in the corners though.
The M235i had a beautiful engine but I will await the M2 before going down that route.
The Golf was fantastic. A little fettle to 350 bhp and that might just be the best all round car on earth.

But my suspicions were right. The A45AMG is fabulously fast out of the crate. Rapid gearbox just adding to the fun.
That thing with another 64 bhp will be a genuine supercar baiter and yet it will take you on holiday or do the shopping or school run.

I wager that if we put one of those against an Integrale (I had a series 2 Integrale myself) it would make it look silly.
Laggy, weak and slow.

I would say Clio v6 is the best I've owned. Out of interest, why is an Integra DC2 or DC5 not classed as a hot hatch? I have a DC2 and the boot definitely does 'hatch' up like any other hot hatch?? Can drop the seats as well....when does a hatchback stop being a hatchback and start becoming a fastback of lift back?

Was the ride in the A45 as bad as all the reports are saying?

Set up for the track rather than British roads?

By broadly the same I mean with an average driver on a typical A road, I am not on about setting Nurburgring times although that said the newest range of hot hatches like the Focus RS, Leon 280, Golf GTI are capable of lap times in line with supercars from a decade or two ago!

While plain old FWD hot hatches aren't really my thing, this old video from Best Motoring in Japan still makes me chuckle: Witness 3 Civic Type Rs wiping the floor with two S2000s around Tsukuba.

The mk2 was especially 'hot' with this bolted in

I think people don't get what a hot hatch is meant to be. It' should not have a cage, buckets or polycarbonate windows.
It should have aircon, a boot for the Labrador and Tesco shop. You should be able to drive the kids to school in comfort, but be able to have a 3 hour detour hoon on the way back.
And this is something the Golf has always managed. In every mk. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Best hot hatch of all (in my opinion) Lancia Delta Integrale....

I had a Lancia Delta HF Turbo IE martini and that was a fantastic car in its time as well.

Also love the R5 Turbo, my mate had one great pocket rocket

The hatch I will always love? Delta Integrale. Is it the best hatch of all time? I don't really care.

Good video that, shows that if you have the skills to use FWD effectively it is in no way the limiting factor in a cars performance. Those FD2s with LSDs and good tyres really are very impressive. Playing devils advocate you will still find that someone will pipe up that even though they were slower the S2000 drivers were having more fun or some sort of rubbish.

My vote would go to the Renaultsport Megane. If I needed back seats - the 265, if I didnt' the R.26.R
7 pages and only 1 or 2 mentions of this? It's the GT3 RS of hot hatches...

No, a coupe with a separate boot (and quite a small one at that, with a very annoying way of opening it).

Mk2 Golf 16v is the best ever. I am biased but today my 26 year old shed was used as a hack to the station and then did a Waitrose shop with a great very quick journey there and back.

No need for aircon as it's got a sunroof, just needs a working radio. Very noisy tyres on the roundabouts too!

Also has to be the mk2 golf gti for me. I have not been in a 16 valver but I will swear by my 8 valve that it's so much fun and also a practical daily. It has a bit more oomph now the head has been polished and ported. Mk2 golfs handle like go karts!
