I test drove a new 306 GTi and the 106 GTi back to back. The smaller lighter car was vastly superior as a pure fun machine (the entire point of a hot hatch). Fast forward to today and it is like comparing a big BHP family wagon like the Focus against a... wait, does anyone even make a car not mega fat these days?... No wonder people do not know what they are missing out on.
To me the term "hot hatch" has been stolen from a now past era and slapped onto any large car the marketing team wish to punt out the door.

Its not all about bhp but its not all about weight either when it comes to fun.
You cant dismiss cars as not being hot hatches when indeed they are hot and they are hatches.
I was also bought up around 80's hot hatches, everyone used to have a 205 GTI, golf GTI or RS Turbo etc but there are also some great got hatches that weight 1200, 1350 or even 1500kgs. Lighter usually means more fun to chuck around but it does not define a type of car.

Would be interesting to compare the 306 GTi with a modern day car like the Fiesta ST - According to Wikipedia, the Fiesta is 4067x1722x1473mm, the 306 is 4030x1680x1380. Pretty sure Evo quoted the Fiesta as weighing 1088kg. - matter of opinion.For now then I would've thought a Megane 265/275 would be the best all round hot hatch to be a good daily and great for a rare track visit. Although I'm sure a M135i could be made a case for.
I know the OP said modern day but I think the Clio 182 Trophy would hold its own in most areas still. I'm more of a fan of the Civic Type-R but I can see why people would say the Trophy is the best ever. Big engine in little car, awesome handling and still looks fresh 10 years later.

My choice will no doubt be controversial... But for me a hot hatch needs to be a jack of all trades, and so by definition is a master of none.
It is a one car that does it all so needs to balance fun handling, long journeys, feel, refinement, safety, family life, visual appeal, price, power, mpg, insurance, running costs and the ability to be parked anywhere etc etc.
Therefore my vote goes to the mk5 VW Golf GTI.

It did cross my mind that he may have meant something that is available to buy today, new, but that wasn't the first thought that crossed my mind.
I don't personally think anything you can buy today is the best hot hatch up until today unless we are judging on pure numbers.
