Correct me if I'm wrong but the original purchase price of just under £80k was list wasn't it? So the article works on the flawed premise that the first owner paid that much for it. Given Jaguar's reputation for discounting new models it's likely they didn't take as much of a hit as almost £17k.

Personally I'd still sooner have an XKR but I'm biased...

Not sure if it's because I live in Coventry (which is pretty near to where they're made, and of course where Jaguar still have some operations) but I see a hell of a lot of F-Type's on the road.
95% of those are driven by people who wont have paid for the car....

I don't get it? It's at a lower price point than a 911 or a V8 Vantage, but has retained similar value to both?

Comparatively an Aston V8 Vantage with less miles has lost around £10k off list ( 2013 V8 Vantage) and a 911 C2S has lost over £14,000 for a similar age but slightly higher mileage ( 2013 911 C2S).

£13k depreciation in a year on this sort of car seems pretty good value IMO.

Sounds awesome, goes awesome, but for me it will take several generations of non-pipe-and-slippers cars for me to get interested (sorry).

I feel that some peoples definition of affordable is on a whole different planet to mine irked. As a single bloke with no dependants and a graduate engineering job I might be able to afford one in about a decade. frown

We liked the BMW 650, but they were 70k new. After 5 years we had loads of choice, ended up with a 5 year old one in our perfect spec and colour for 15.5k with FBMW SH and 48k miles. The F-Type looks more appealing, but hopefully it will be drop to an affordable price within 4 to 5 years. What would help is if one of the lovely PH's on here would be interested in a 13 year old BM 650 with about 200k miles on it. Discrete PH smilie will be included. hehe

Cracking cars. How Jaguar managed to get that exhaust system on the V8 approved is beyond me. Having owned a fair amount of exotica over the years, the F Type V8 is a bargain and terrific VFM

Welcome to the real world where you have to work for your treats, rather than the glitter presented in the media where treasures fall from heaven.

P.S. 25 years is closer to the mark if you remain in engineering (projects always overrun).

No no, in 25yrs it will probably have become a classic and shot up in value again. There will be a brief window when it is 12-15yrs old where they will drop to a four figure price and I might actually have some money to buy one assuming petrol is still attainable and there are any unruined ones left.

If I had £60k to spend on a car I certainly wouldn't spend it on one of these though, it would go on one of these cloud9

Very nice, but not really comparable, the Jag does everything whereas a Cobra is a kit car (well most are) and is great for a blas ton a sunny day but the rest of the time its an ornament, cant imagine they are generally any faster than the Jag either, even with the same power, ok, will be lighter but probably has a hefty manual box and the capacity to spit you off the road very quickly if you take liberties.

The Jags depreciation isnt a surprise, its a mass market, 80 grand car, it does what they all do.

I am usually immune to hype, but I really dont think there is a better looking car on sale at the moment than the Coupe, makes the 991 look very dull (and it has too many badges on the back) a
,in fact Jaguar seem to have pulled off what the last did in 1961.

I wonder if I should make my neighbour a derisory offer for his F-Type V8 S, and tell him I’m doing a favour by taking it off his hands before it’s worth shed money?

Sorry to be a spotter but the V8S only has 488bhp not 500+

Only the Coupe gets the full fat engine.

Don't get me wrong. Been out in one, it's not found wanting for anymore power.
Apologies, amended that now!

The surprise with this car was given demand and excitement we thought the F-Type may hold onto value a little better. Yes it's hardly chronic depreciation but given the F-Type hype it seemed fairly surprising. We'll come back when they're £30K perhaps.

And as for coupes, I'll certainly have a blue V6 S please whenever they're within reach. Lovely.
