RE: Audi RS5 TDI: Driven
Discussion
I can't imagine it will be long before most turbo cars have electric motors to give low rev boosts and the high end is the obvious place for Audi to introduce this technology. I can't see this being as much a problem from a reliability point of view as the turbos and high pressure fuel injection systems.
As much as I hated diesel cars for most of my life... the count is now up to two owned.
1, Shogun 2.5 TD not intercooled... put me off for another 10 years (have had 4 x V6 Shoguns..)
2, BMW 330D M-Sport Plus (Brembo)
Second car is fast, frugal, handles, fun and looks ok.. in fact, some would say, sporty!
If you don't like fast diesels, think you are going to have to move countries as petrol imports are dropping even more - year on year.
....new Passat, they aren't even bothering...
(I'm moving to the US and buying a 5.7 Hemi something or other!)

No problem with the car I'm sure it will appeal to many people in the real world but FFS give it a rest with this engine noise through the speakers bullst.
Did the people that came up with these systems use this as inspiration I wonder?

In fact that guy's probably got a nice job in the automotive industry now.

Oh god, sporty diesels. Depressing.
I drive a BMW 123D M Sport - twin turbos, 207 Bhp and 350 lb/ft torque. Not depressing at all. A real GTi type car and I enjoy driving it.It is a great car for the masses but far from a GTI or any other hot hatch for that matter. That is why they make the likes of the 135i etc.
i like the idea of the car but pricing will be the deciding factor. i wouldnt class it as a 'sport' car but certainly would be a tremendous GT with no lag and big torque it could certainly swallow some miles and give a few smiles along the way.
i personally love diesel engines and think some modern ones are sounding reasonably nice, our 1.5dci juke sounds pretty cool and pulls lovely and smooth too 5k revs. although i dont buy into this whole sound through the speaker lark, i like the windows open listening to the turbo(s) spooling and a big huff on gear change

An interesting technical exercise, an attempt to turn a coal burner into a sporty car, but until they can do something about that low rev ceiling, slow loss of revs due to the heavy flywheel, the weight, the complexity and the crap noise (or fake noise, which is just as bad), I'll find it hard to get excited. Maybe if they redesigned it to run on petrol, it would be an improvement - that way it would just be an RS5, which is hardly lauded as a great drive, but I'd sooner have one of those than one of these derv cars.
The used values of these in years to come will be absolutely miniscule, who is going to want one of these ludicrously complex beasts? Who will be able to fix them? When I think of some of the bills the original RS6 can through, I dread to think what one of these oil-fired monsters could do.

So to sum up another boring over complicated audi that burns diesel
And has the handling of a large bag of anvils ! It will sell like hot cakes, the sheep will be queuing up at the dealerships as we speak and the warranty guy will be having kittens
When's the alfa Romeo version out ?

Problem is with fast diesels is that they tend to have fuel consumption like a petrol. So why not get a petrol instead?
Here the mpg is apparently
MPG: N/A
How often do you need this much power on the road to sacrifice all that is good with a diesel which is lots of mpg? They seem to have tested this on the track, what's the point when most diesels are driven on the A2 and M6 and some other god awful road full of traffic. Perhaps it is the link to LeMans though??
Number of times a driver will need this facility in normal driving to show who's boss will be about 2 or 3 times in 30 000 miles. Only to be over taken again as they have to peel into the overpriced motorway fuel stop.
Or are people going to be taking these on track days?

It's not about what you do with it or how it drives in the road. it's about what the car can do on a big German track in the hands of a racing driver, being able to lord it over people on the road and it being an 'aspirational' badge, of course.Or are people going to be taking these on track days?
mmmmm. The old man has the 313ps diesel is his new a6. I'm not an Audi fan AT ALL - but - it really is a fantastic engine. More than 300bhp and 600NM of torque really does send you up the road when you want it to. I drove it expecting not to like it but came away very impressed indeed.
Re' the "speaker" this is from Audi's website:
The actuator system essentially consists of a speaker which imposes a defined oscillation pattern on the exhaust flow and transforms the typical TDI exhaust note into a more sonorous roar that is closer to the output of a high-performance petrol engine.
Not as bad as BMW pumping sound in through the interior speakers IMO. Obviously a bit of engineering involved to modify the flow of the exhaust. I can live with that. They haven't just shoved a set of Logitech desktop speakers up the wheel arch.
