Now diesel is on a parity with petrol cost per L, this makes even more sense. Brilliant.

Not as bad as BMW pumping sound in through the interior speakers IMO.
read the article: it has the inside speaker sound too.

I drive a BMW 123D M Sport - twin turbos, 207 Bhp and 350 lb/ft torque. Not depressing at all. A real GTi type car and I enjoy driving it.
Agreed. While I don't like your choice of transport, some of these petrol poofters need to spend some time in a modern diesel. hehe

I've never thought to myself, or heard anyone say "oh, that diesel sounds a bit fruity" ... or even "mmm nice diesel".

This kind of sums Audi up for me. I prefer a bit of drama and spice!
forget the idling this sounds pretty good

I gave a mate a lift the other day. He has an S3. After a conversation about how impressed he was with my Jag, he was then speechless when I told him it was diesel.

I'd love to. But 25k miles a year means I can't. So the diesel means I can have a pretty good version of the V8.

I'm a bit shocked by all the negativity. This is a concept car, and the figures are stunning. Piped noise is common to a lot of modern cars and I think people are getting a bit distracted from the important stuff here. A diesel is the perfect platform for a concept car showing off electric compressor technology.

I have an Alpina D3 with the same engine and I'm sorry, it is depressing. Don't get me wrong, I like the car. The engine just ruins it.

That's an optimistic torque as well, seems to be 295 lb-ft from what I can find.

'Audi has embraced the black pump more wholeheartedly than its German rivals'

Ignoring the Bmw 123d, 125d and new tri-turbo a bit there aren't we?

Along with the PH favourite a remapped 335/535d
Agreed BMW has offered a production 3.0 tri turbo 380hp diesel for quite a while and has been at the forefront of "sporty" diesel tech with the 335d.

"Petrol poofters"?

I know that's supposed to be a quip but come on...you're talking about the fuel that powers super cars, muscle cars etc. etc.

Taking that to mean "...those who've expressed negative opinions on them need to spend time in a modern diesel", I have. I even had a Jag XF 3.0D (240ps) Premium Luxury for a month whilst my BMW was being repaired after someone reversed into it. Despite the BMW having significantly less power and torque, being much slower and much less "desirable" to Mr.Average, I still missed it. The Jag was brilliant for cruising up and down the Motorway and the same engine's also great in the Discovery 4 but the characteristics of the engine just don't suit sports cars...plus, despite the convenience of an auto, I can't do without a manual 'box in one of my cars and they don't suit these new diesels either.

I can understand a diesel in a GT-type coupé (640d etc.) but not in a RennSport Audi, BMW M car etc.

As an owner of an SQ5 and previously always owned petrol cars (previous was a 3.2 V6) I must say I'm very happy with it. I consider myself a petrol head having owned an Alfa GT, S2000, Civic type R, BMW Z4 3.0 & F430 spider in the past.

I am now 35 years with a two year old. 10 years ago if someone said to me here you go, here's a diesel SUV for your car I would have told them to F* off and never in a million years.
Times change and you end up driving what suits your need, the SQ5 is a pure mile muncher on the motorway, pretty quick off the line, returns 45 mpg and costs me £250 a year to insure (£52k car!).
Yes it has the sound actuator in the exhaust (what has been talked about in this article) but it doesn't pump sound through the internal speakers like an M5 does. I know its fake however it does sound good and its quite amusing to drive past people hearing it growl, they then take a second look as they don't expect to hear that sort of thing from an SUV going past.

Even the F430 has exhausts tuned to enhance the sound (yes it sounds fantastic) but would you call that fake? End of the day you have cars that tick a box well (F430 sounds great, bloody fast and looks good but no good for lugging the family around) but there are others that tick more boxes, maybe not as through as a pure sports car but enough to make an enjoyable drive but also return more practical benefits.

Each to their own!!

+1, a flipping joke. Could they have not done this with a petrol engine. Besides just called it some other fartbox named TDI. But when you call it RS5. It kinda makes the normal RS5 less desirable; I hope it fks up their residuals; sorry for any RS5 owners.

I would rather a 1M over that anyday. That is depressing compared to say a 1M or 135i.

WRONG, soon the EU will clamp down on diesels due to the amount of particulate matter; which is far worse for humans than petrol.
It may go back to olden days when diesel was on real workhorses i.e. commercial vehicles.

As much as I hated diesel cars for most of my life... the count is now up to two owned.

1, Shogun 2.5 TD not intercooled... put me off for another 10 years (have had 4 x V6 Shoguns..)

2, BMW 330D M-Sport Plus (Brembo)

Second car is fast, frugal, handles, fun and looks ok.. in fact, some would say, sporty!

If you don't like fast diesels, think you are going to have to move countries as petrol imports are dropping even more - year on year.

....new Passat, they aren't even bothering...

(I'm moving to the US and buying a 5.7 Hemi something or other!)
