Looking at replacing the Nissan in next year.

Thinking about getting either

Subaru legacy estate 07, 80k, 2 or 3l petrol about 5k
Merc e class 2.4 pet or 3l d, 100k about 6k 2004
Volvo v70, estate d5, 03-05 c80k about 5k
A4 c120k 1.8 pet, 5k

Ideally comfiest but also cheapest to run?

From that list, the Volvo for comfort. Consider a Saab 9-5 too perhaps.

Go Volvo IMO, an S60 or V70.

A Saab 9-5 as mentioned above is a good shout, also.

My S80 was noticeably more comfortable than my S60 and they are better value IMO.

True, it's possibly not the most economical of barges, but if you consider how often it will go wrong (never) then you can spend this cash on petrol instead. A bit of man maths later it all makes sense biggrin

I have a 2003 V70 petrol and the seats are brilliant but ride quality isn't up there with the best and there is plenty of road noise.

S-Type Jaguar?

Refer to the bargain barge thread, but if you can't be bothered, go Lexus. Yes, it's a V8 but it will do late 20s on the motorway, will never break, and will the the comfiest most well built thing you have ever sat in. I've had lots of Saabs (9-5 at the moment) and they're great cars, but they're not in the same league as an LS Lexus.
