Seems an importer to get around rules of not importing LR in the late 80s because no duel air bags was filling in serial numbers on the engine blocks and re stamping. In order to say they were imported earlier.

Link is to wrong thread. Try this one...
http://www.defendersource.com/forum/showthread.php...

But it's a ~60 page thread (and counting)...

TL;DR :- 40-odd vehicles seized in one day, not much surprise from those with seeming clue. Main link seems to be at least one known hooky importer ringing cars too recent to import legally.

They've been crushing even correctly titled cars of allowable age at the Port on arrival if they've been modified to the point of appearing to be a recent vehicle!

Thanks. I forgot I started browsing the site looking for landrover porn.

Yes... importers need to be very very wary of importing old defenders to the USA

They are working very closely with British police and Land Rover to identify Defender's which differ significantly from their alleged registration date.

As we all know, Defenders are easily modified with parts from newer models, and newer models easily modified to appear older than they really are.

Vehicles which are suspected of being tampered with are being crushed.

Interesting. I sold an 86 V8 110 last month which is going for export to the US. Was offered a fair amount of money for it considering it lacked a working engine. What it did have was a galvanized chassis which I guess by a quick read the thread means it might not be legitimate to import it. I wonder if they were just after the VIN?

Yes galv chassis swap makes it unsuitable for export to USA.

They consider any chassis or engine swap "tampering" and thus, it is no longer the "original" vehicle.

This is why I am not restoring my 110 V8, in case I ever want to take it with me to the states it needs to be as original as possible.

How does the registration process for home built creations work in the US?

In my mind at least, the Defender is probably one of the easiest vehicles to ship over in parts and then build over there?

Same thing is / was rife for the classic mini. The last MPI versions (and many others to be fair) don't meet the rules, so importers / private individuals 'ring' a newer car with old details so it can be imported

From what I gather, once the vehicle has been in the USA for 2 years you are allowed to do things such as swap the engine etc, however everything must be fully documented with photographs and paperwork/receipts.

Otherwise if the feds come knocking your in trouble.

indeed...

Rather chase down slightly modified defender owners, than the hundreds of illegal immigrants that pour over the border daily.
