I reckon this may eventually become a cult hit in the future, when they're super rare after having so many engine failures.

Maybe I should keep mine and sell it for millions!? MWAHAHAHAHA
That is one of the nicest Rx-8s I've seen. Those arches and those wheels are yummy and it's a nice shape.
Obvious but this link has to be posted:

I regret not buying a clean MR2 Turbo just because of the wheels being corroded and the pain being a bit faded. Just £4K a few years ago and it would have been mine. frown

Thank you! I'll never get bored of dropping photo's of my cars into threads, its nice to get compliments! biggrin

The wheels do make it IMO, they look lovely! Not keen on the base design of the RX-8 but I do like the R3 body kit I have on mine.

I never cared whether a car was Japanese or Italian, or whatever, but after owning a CRX Mk2 for a couple of years I am a big fan of Honda's (and Japan's) way of doing "light and revvy".

I have great admiration for the other Japanese manufacturers because they all have brought something fun and unique for car guys over the years. True gamechangers: NSX, Skyline GT-R R32, Lancer Evo's and MX-5. Would like to drive (not own) an RX7, Supra and special edition Subaru STi's.

The original Gran Turismo game played a huge part in developing my love for '90s Jap cars. The first time I ever heard about the likes of Type-R Hondas was in this game. So many other cars I had no clue existed and ended up learning about. Did anyone else religiously read the info tabs on the model pages?
Yeah, I used to love reading about the cars too, fond memories! Definitely a golden age for Japanese cars.

Never fails to raise a smile when I open the garage door.

It's a keeper!

Gran Turismo also had a lasting effect on me too - I've loved the 90's Jap cars ever since having been through a few MR2s (inc Rev 3 turbo), VR4 and now an Evo. I have always wanted a Supra, an amazing piece or engineering in its day and still a thing of beauty. I do think it was the golden era for sports cars.

There are some other stars of Gran Turismo lurking in this thread however, not just the Jap stuff. Remember the Viper GTS? I was actually looking at these on PH a month or so ago, in particular a 780hp supercharger one lol. Ultra cool.

But then I also remember from Gran Turismo that the Cerbera was one of the fastest stockers in the game which also perhaps set me down the TVR path. I will never forget some of the epic battles my best mate and I had racing a pair of stock Primera GTs around Laguna Seca. Great memories.....

I love Japanese cars, have had a few over the last 10 years.

3x S13 200SX
Mk2 MR2
AE101 Levin GT Apex (20 valve)
AE111 Levin BZR (20 valve)
Civic EK9
Pulsar GTI-R

I currently had a Mk3 MR2 running a 2zz and a AE86 Levin with a 270bhp CA18DET.

I fancy an Evo next.

Has anyone actually owned both the EK9 Type R and the Integra Type R? I've always wanted the teg but the EK9 does tempt me...
Yes I have and they are both wonderful cars. I ownded and still own an FD3 and had a company EK9 and they were both so much fun but very very different. For little money the EK9 has bags of on the back roads and was pretty decent on the motorway too. The gearshift is lovely and crisp and the steering feel was bang on. Being so light it felt very quick and the noise above 6000rpm was electric.

As for the RX7, I swear that car is like an extension of me when I drive it. It's so absolutely full of character and still draws so much attention. The steering feel is absolutely first class and the handling is amongst the best I have ever experienced and I really have driven a lot of very nice cars including most of the dream jap exotica. It's so light it's a real handful at times and it defies your belief that you are going so fast. The gear changes are very short but so precise and direct. The performance is so addictive and the sound on mine with mods is terrific. I always get told that it sounds like a P51 Mustang flying over and with the external wastegate and various valves releasing pressure it's intoxicating. What annoys me is the amount of people that call them unreliable as if well looked after they are so well behaved. Let's not forget the engine revs to 9000 rpm so I expect wear but they don't deserve the stupid reputation they get.

I was lucky enough to own an R33 gtst and then an R33 GTR, gtst was brilliant fun, GTR was in a league of its own though. 90's jap stuff seems to just be cool, not sure the new stuff like the GTR is...

I knew the RX7 was good but not that good. This has me thinking about RX7s, but honestly I like low maintenance cars (I'm an idiot when it comes to working on cars myself and don't have a garage space to work on either, that's why) and they seem a bit excessive?

Anyone want to shed some light on factual RX7 maintenance and not just myths from people who never owned them? I like a well handling car and so far everyone has raved about the RX7 handling.

A few of my favourite nuggets about the RX-7:
  • The RX-7's styling was inspired by the Jaguar E-type owned by the chief designer, and a Ferrari 375GTB was also brought into the studio as an example.
  • Before the development team even put pen to paper to design the new car, each member of staff was sent to a race school in California or Japan, and then for a stint go-karting, so they would know what they were trying to achieve.
  • The engineers examined the ultra-lightweight WW2 Zero fighter in detail to gain ideas for weight reduction; the final car came out about a quarter-tonne lighter than a Supra.
  • Weight savings include a smaller glass area (-9kg), aluminium bonnet (-8kg), single rather than dual exhaust (-8kg), forged alloy suspension arms, seam welding, and drilled aluminium pedals.

I've had mine for a little over a year now and put 8,000 trouble free miles on it.

Its 20 years old and is in good condition - the interior is spotless and everything is intact. I've done a little preventative maintenance just to stop anything obvious from going wrong, they do run quite hot, so a better radiator was one of my first buys. Other than that, just basic servicing, checking the oil regularly, properly warming it up, cooling it down and not using it for really short trips.

They're reliable cars if treated right, just like the RX-8.

EDIT - for the mileage...

I bought my RX-7 in November 2012. Since then:

Servicing (6 monthly x 4) - £758
Rust repair and respray - £3,294
Other repairs (turbo system, door locks, brakes) - £1,686
Engine modifications (mostly to cope with trackdays) - £3,529
Tyres x 4 - £681

Total: £9,948

Note that I didn't get a bad one by any means - it's never had anything *serious* go wrong with it. The previous owner paid £5k for a quality engine rebuild, and the basic engine has been solid.

This is based on taking the car to a specialist for everything, a lot of this was labour so if you have time, skill and tools you can pay a lot less.

The rust was unlucky, FDs don't normally rust but a previous owner had replaced the rear spoiler with a facelift one, unfortunately it let water in causing expensive damage.

The mods ended up costing a lot in labour, partly as it was done in two stages - doing everything at once would have been cheaper.

No regrets btw - I genuinely can't think of anything I'd rather have spent ten grand on, than keeping my FD on the road, it really is that good.

Japan at its strongest I'd say the 90s were. Here is mine, undergoing some big engine changes this year, hopefully a new thread soon.

^^ Nice Do-luck kit on the '2!

Big fan of Jap cars myself. Owned a '97 MkII MR2 for nearly 5 years now, and have an '03 Impreza STi as my daily.
