RE: New Classic Car Show coming
Discussion
And are all these lovely examples of rare exotica perhaps for sale? Is this just posh people getting ace free advertising for their investments? [/cynical]
Having said that I would probably enjoy watching this.
ETA: Someone in TV land has spotted the Octane audience without their niche of TV.

Can't be a bad as the way Top Gear has gone recently !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Remind me how many viewers Top Gear has worldwide? Anyway, back on topic. Yes, this new show looks like it may have some potential but seems like it needed the celeb addition to get the production money. Sadly this appears to be TV in general now. Unless it appeals to the lowest common denominator it won't get funding. That's probably the only link to Top Gear we can make here.
The series is being produced, according to the blurb, because the classic car market has been the fastest growing asset class, by value, in recent years - by 257% since 2005. Sony is producing it so we should see some very nice HD video of the well-heeled in expensive cars in expensive settings.
I remember Quentin Wilson on Top Gear I wonder what he's been up to since then? I saw him pop up on TV advertising warranties I think it's nice he's on a show again. He does have a laid back and slightly pretentious presenting style but that will probably suit the show.
I guess this will be a bit like 'Petrolicious' but it looks like they will only cover expensive classic cars with some celebrity opinions and nice looking filming locations. I'll definitely give it a try if it's on Freeview.
I just googled QW and according to wikipedia after graduation Quentin Wilson founded a car dealership selling Ferraris and Maseratis! Sounds very unlikely but you never know perhaps his parents are, or were, very rich?!

I know its not the popular opinion, but I've been following the production of this over the last few weeks online and it looks like something I would really love to watch. Something beautifully shot, set in exotic and glamorous locations, more about the aesthetics and history of the cars than how to balance a carburetor.
I know as a PH'er we're supposed to love all the oily bits, but I find it a tad boring after a while. Sometimes I just want to see pretty cars in pretty places. There is only one other big budget motoring show out there (everything else is slightly low rent by comparison) so it could be interesting. I also think it will have a part to play in bringing classics more to the attention of the 'mainstream' audience, which is never a bad thing. All IMHO of course.

I followed them around Bond Street, London a Sundays back. Clearly world class production indeed. They were filming from the back of a big Rangie, just like Top Gear. I made sure to try and bmw z3 m coupe photobomb their filming of an old Aston DB#?.

I think 'Classic Driver' online is more niche than 'Octane'.Having said that I would probably enjoy watching this.

Everybody should join be in getting POA prices banned. Are they a sure sign of a dodgy dealer?

I should be excited about a new car show.
However.. I know I'm clearly more aligned to the sort of beardy adenoidal car geek that Clarkson likes to mock at every opportunity. I just wish these shows were more technical / factual than packed with 'A list celebrities' and 'hollywood type budgets' - I just want to know about cars, to see how they fix cars, to learn the more technical / intricate stuff. The rest of it is just meaningless garnish.
God knows they make enough dumbed down dross for the masses (X Factor, Britains Got Talent), is it too much to ask to have something a bit more high brow?!
Indeed. Those who want to learn aren't of commercial value. The most money is made by getting as many thickos who spend more than they earn to watch. However.. Of all the car related presenters I find myself wanting an entire show of the third one off top gear just talking about something you'd never heard of or going into the intricate details of something common. Or just giving the full details on a car.
I suspect he could make the story of the Morris Marina fascinating.
As far as I am concerned there is an entire documentary series in detailing all the different types of gearboxes and how they work, down to the finest details.
Fuelling, braking systems, suspension etc all fascinating and could be covered in real depth.
But unless BBC4 will take it it has no commercial value.

'The Classic Car Show will be formally launched at MIPCOM in Cannes in October. Its unique format brings a truly global perspective to viewers while its multi-million pound production budget means the cars and personalities featured receive the gloss HD treatment they deserve.
From January 2015, The Classic Car Show will be globally released in 13 x 1-hour/26 x 30-minute episodes.'
looks like someone has spent a lot of money, hoping to get aired in lots of counties..
If they are taking it to MIPCOM then they haven't sold it yet, which means they haven't made it yet. From January 2015, The Classic Car Show will be globally released in 13 x 1-hour/26 x 30-minute episodes.'

All they will have is contracts, agreements, a glossy outline of how amazing it will be once they start spending their client's money and a knocked together visual pitch for the buyers.
One core thing that doesn't add up is the list of UK centric 'celebrities' and then the amazing sales pitch of rolling it out to 13 countries, of which at least 12 won't have a clue or interest in who any of them are and so it has no commercial value.
I think PH is just reporting a commercial sales pitch as the PR agent builds up web traffic (then sold as 'eyeball interest') prior to trying to sell the concept.
Rough production stats suggest there is a less than 5% chance of ever hearing about this pitch again.
