Ive found that cars that have lost their servicing records tend to have had a haircut

I went to view a car for sale privately recently and the way the history was presented (just a lot of paperwork chucked in a carrier bag) caused such a bad impression that I really wasn't bothered after that. As it turned out, the car was similarly uncared for and I was happy to take my cash home.

i judge a car on how it is today not on weather it had a million pounds spent 5 years ago.
look at the current owner.
the people saving receipts for consumables? really?
this would be different for buying a "classic"
if its a collectors car then i want to know the person selling is a total anorak and has never driven it in anger and does all the collector car st that i find contemptible .
a car is to be used, things will break so you fix em.
if a car is known for second gear going awol and there is a bill for it being fixed then fine.

but if you are keeping receipts for wiper blades and bulbs then you have a problem
if you want to see that kind of thing when buying then you need help.
i refilled the washer fluid and checked tyre pressure does this make my car worth more?

Got my motor up for sale now, every receipt, MoT, all books fully stamped..I only buy high milers so paper work and a trail of the cars past is important to me... Looking for the next car, I've lost count of the amount of adverts stating FSH but misplaced books, will send them on when I find them...yeah right

I'm another one who keeps all the receipts in a folder too smile

Its only a £500 banger of an old Volvo, but I still think its nice to prove its been well looked after if I ever sell it.

Almost all of the general public do not give a st about cars, they hold it in the same esteem as a fridge, so they have no interest in keeping every receipt, they part ex them in and the garage doesnt care either.
Well said yes

It's just a tool for getting from A to B for most people whilst the dealer just sees it as a lump of metal

i try and keep it
i have folder, it has a lot of insurance details, tax renewal reminders, old mots, all stuff which if fking useless, and a bunch of part receipts, but i have no idea which car any of the stuff relates to, and at the moment i only have 1 car, when looking in the folder once i found the insurance docs for a car i don't ever remember owning

It is nonsense to keep EVERY reciept for EVERYTHING spent on a car.
Now dont get me wrong I love looking through paperwork like this because there are some gems to be found,a Golf I had came with over £700 worth of suspension work.
My son had a supercharged Golf VR6,bills for a LSD and a rebuilt gearbox the previous year, now that is a bill to keep for future reference, but bulbs/wiper blades/tyres from two years ago? straight in the bin.

Everything except the fuel.

Wipers, bulbs, services, tyres, all kept in the folder. Why not? It shows a history of fixing things that need doing.

I kept every receipt for my 370Z, bought from new.

I even kept all fuel receipts.

Bit anal, yes and defo wouldn't do it again.

When I went to sell the car (at below market value), noone was interested. And I seriously struggled to sell it.

I do think buying a car off someone does add a certain amount of value in a variety of forms.

Monetary - some real enthusiast types looking for a particular marque will alway pay a bit more for the perfect car - low owner, fsh, all receipts. All that st really turns some people on and they will pay more for the 'best' example.

The keeping every receipt thing is just part of the enthusiasts pre requisite.

If your car was a st model, in a st colour then no amount of paperwork would entice anyone to pay more than its true market value.
