Why the hate for different?
Discussion
The cruiser is nasty to look at and apparently nasty to drive and seems that in this country it is attractive to the sort of bell end who likes to be called Tex but comes from Rotherham and plasters the car in extra chrome and U.S. flags.
The new new beetle looks odd, something wrong about the proportions but can't put my finger on it. Like the first one, VW trying to jump on the retromodern bandwagon and missing. The Mini and 500 got it right.
I quite like the cube and the Kia Soul as quirky little things.
The Figaro, I'm ambivalent about.

So why is there so much hate for cars that are designed purely to be different?
Is it hatred for something different? I don't think so, there is expensive and different and cheap and different, these are the latter.
The Non PC within us would say they are cars for women and hairdressers.
I don't hate them, I find them interesting, but then I don't share most peoples opinions either so let's talk about 'The majority'.
Why the hate? The one thing (apart from the Figaro) they all have in common is they are all of a retro design, they're not new, they have taken something we once knew as original and bold and recycled it for the masses.
It's attempting to engage with you visually to make massive amounts of money yet has no soul, they are saying "Look at me, I'm cute, buy me"
It's a bit like taking a song which you grew up with and loved, then someone re-hashing it and releasing it.
It's lazy, it's unoriginal and shows no creativity, most will say "The original was better".
Most people who remembered the old will hate the new, those who weren't old enough will think it's great.
They are all cars trying to have a personality, but failing.
- Actually, thinking about it I may be wrong about the Figaro, didn't Noddy & Big ears drive one?

i love a differently styled car and kudos to all the manufacturers who try it. (not the beetle though thats just a remake)
the cube is my favourite of those above.
i hope that electric cars, (no longer designed with an engine bay) will give us even more weird looking stuff in the future.

I quite like the Cruiser externally, and there's a fair bit of space in them too from the two I've looked at. What really put me off them was the cheap as st interior and layout of the stuf you touch. And it felt nasty. If the interior was of a bit better quality and aesthetics, then I think I probably would have bought one instead of a 307 that I ended up with

The Beetle was a MkIV Golf, .
No it's not. The one pictured above is based on the mk5 (or possibly mk6 if you actually consider that to be a different platform).I agree that the first generation "new" Beetle was a bit of an abomination (although no more so than the mk1 TT, really) but whilst I haven't driven one, I suspect the second is probably pretty reasonable.

People don't know what they want. They complain when all cars "look the same", they complain when they are "too halfords" and they complain when they do look different from the rest of the current crowd. There never has been and never will be a car that everyone likes.
This is why you have designers and marketers. To tell you what you want, because most people are too stupid to decide for themselves.
You could probably add the Juke to that list. It's different, much more interesting looking than other cars in it's segment but I've only ever seen it slated on here.
I'd really love a Mk1 Nissan Cube. They just look brilliant. Ripe for some modifications.

Another vote for the Cube, leave it alone!
Think of the Fiat Multipla - widely regarded as one of the most f*ck-ugly cars ever to see the light of day, it's saving grace being that it was incredibly practical, safe and actually quite reliable (esp. for a Fiat!). The PT Cruiser is both ugly and pretty hopeless, not overly practical, not overly economical and certainly not built for performance. It's a giant 'meh' made worse by being offensive to look at.
