In 1992 is I spent a lot of time in the Turkish part of Cyprus. There were some interesting local market cars about then.

Turkish made Land-Rovers which were more or less like UK ones.

What interested me were new looking RenaultSport based on old 1970s designs. A bit like Dacias but they were badged something different.

I'd live to know more, especially about this next car.

I swear I saw these but can find nothing on Google.

A ford badged MK 5 Cortina based car but with a Sieera Sapphire like back end and other more modern for the time Ford features.

Does ths jog any memories?

Doesn't help, but when I was there a couple of years back, virtually every car out in the styx was a renault 12. IIRC they were made under licence by Dacia until fairly recently. A proper blast from the past as we had one back in the 70s.

Yes those Renault 12s look familiar. But anyone go any ideas about the Fords I remember.

I live in Turkey these days, if you can give me a bit more of a steer I can try to find out more.

The way you described it though there are bound to be a few Mehmets still driving around in some fine examples of these cars.

Sorry, I just clicked one of the links from another poster. Now I have a clearer understanding smile

Indeed it is now part of Koc Holdings (largest holding co here) who also have the partnerships with Fiat, they are in fact the largets manufacturer in Turkey.

These older cars really are quite amusing to see driving around, not that you see many of them in Istanbul but in the east and other parts of Anadolu (Anatolia) there are still quite a few.

The Ford Taunus will be the Cortina like car you've seen.

I remember back in the 80s the actual Cortina (the same as the UK one) was badged "Taunus" in a lot of European countries.

Come to mention it, wasn't the Hyundai something-or-other (Stellar?) a Cortina underneath?

Sorry, a bit of a digression, but Ford certainly milked that design.

Yes, I saw a few in Spain c.1988.

Cortina is Spanish for curtain.

It must have been the Taunus judging by the picture. It was the rear spoiler I remember that in my distant memory made it look like the back end of a Sierra Sapphire.

Odd as I was familiar with the 2 door Taunus, living next to a European ferry port as a kid I would often spot them on Swedish Danish and Norwegian plates.

Thanks for clearing up a 20-plus year mystery.

Yes yes and yes.

And for you goats out there, Koc (pronounced "coach") is Turkish for sheep (well, actually a male sheep, ram), which is sort of related to a goat (Turkish for goat: ketci)

Some further nostalgia here:

and several of these older models are still getting around. Of course, usually to be avoided when you see one on the road, especially in the hands of boy racers evil
