The sunroof: this year's must-have new car option?
Discussion
Ghastly things if you are tall. Most cars are rendered undriveable by the fitting of them.
Bain of my life. If they are now being tied into 'packages' that contain options you might want but the manufacturer has determined its only profit maximising to force you to have a sunroof as well then it's just another reason to not bother with modern cars.
They are a good product for midgets but not normal people.

Clearly no hardcore Pistonheads have read this thread yet. Holes in the structure equals less rigidity in the chassis Would never order a fast sports car with a sunroof!
What's wrong with rolling down the window or a full on convertible anyway? Never seen the point in sunroofs myself personally.
Just noticed that newly posted video on the limited edition Spirit R RX7 .........features a sunroof! What's wrong with rolling down the window or a full on convertible anyway? Never seen the point in sunroofs myself personally.

realy!!!
Yes, really! Electric rear blind, front and rear climate control, front and rear heated seats, but no sun roof. I've never missed it and the only reason I open the sunroof on my others cars that have them, is to check they still work. realy!!!

What are you wittering on about?!!!!!What's wrong with rolling down the window or a full on convertible anyway? Never seen the point in sunroofs myself personally.
All serious drivers know that the weight distribution panel (what idiot, non drivers seem to think is a sunroof!!) allows you to redistribute mass to the rear of the car for when you are executing serious power slides on the morning commute.
Combine this with the centre of gravity reduction rear seat mechanism and what your average pleb layman will mistake as your mother's shopping car is a lethal track tool capable of slaying any parked car in a drive off.

Does anyone remember those hideous pop-up sunroofs that the windscreen places used to sell? They were often a bit leaky, but you saw them often and were often funded by insurance companies who thought they were paying for a new windscreen.
The hatches with the locking lever? My first car, a Renault 5 had one of these. It was the last time that sunroofs didn't reduce head room. They were a factory option for cars in the 80s.

I posted that on my Blackberry when I wasn't concentrating properly and have just noticed how many times I used the word 'often".

Haven't had a car with a sunroof for a few years. Last car I had one on was a 2001 Clio. It was one of those flimsy tilt only affairs which didn't give me any problems with leaks. My last 2 cars have had a/c only which I prefer.
I had a Cavalier with a proper tilt/slide sunroof. It had the pull over blind on it too, so you could block out the daylight if it got too warm. I had a similar sunroof on a mk2 astra which I couldn't use in full slide mode as it buffeted and had almost a helicopter type sound effect. But my Citroen zx was the only car I've owned with an electric sunroof.
I think now I prefer air con to having a sunroof at all. I still have nightmares about my first car, a mk1 fiesta which had an awful sunroof that had been sealed shut but still leaked. It even had the capacity to hold water and leak even when it was dry outside!

All 3 of mine have factory fit moonroofs - I actively seek it out on second hand cars and always spec it ( on new ones ) if available
Being honest, never had a problem with leaks - although my Astra GTE one jammed once but it was an easy fix. Getting adept at fixing E46 internal blinds as well now!

Sun roof is great for keeping a car cool if you are forced to park it in direct sunlight. It also cools the cabin down very quickly when combined with open windows. Real air is much nicer than air con.
The sunroof is great for letting tons of hot air out before cranking up the a/c on a hot day when you return to the car.Other than that great for providing light but no noise (assuming glass) all year round.
Love them.
