We seem to have enough money to throw at the train network.Good job us Brits do mind queing.

19 miles of the congestion could be easily sorted getting rid of the Dartford toll, and come to think of it the misery of the M6/M6 toll around Birmingham too.Its as ever all about revenue,so wishful thinking...

But the Dartford Toll is there to control demand for the Dartford Crossing, thereby easing the congestion caused by the Dartford Toll.

Luckily I have only had the misfortune of driving down the M25 a handful of times. Most recent trip was a few weeks back, standing traffic in 28C was fun for a lot of people. Traffic heading the other way back up north for the grand depart was just as bad. Was thankful that I could stick my air con on full and had plenty of good music and snacks for the hour or so of stop start and crawling traffic.

Not as smug as DJRC and his pool but ive just sauntered home via empty country lanes. 10 minutes smooth wallowing in the slushmatic!

And a redesign of the m3 junction
This.

For the past 2.5 years I've been commuting up to Harrogate every Monday and coming back every Thursday afternoon.

When I get in my car at 2pm in Harrogate and switch my Sat Nav on, it's already warning of delays between 11 an 12. As my journey progresses, the traffic gradually backs up from J11/12... typically reaching J17/18 by the time I get to the M25.

Having another major motorway joining 1 miles before a major exit is just stupid road design.

On the Eastern side, whoever though it would be a good idea to pull toll booths on a busy stretch of Motorway should be shot in the back of the head.

So having cars waiting stacked up to pay a toll is better than it being free and the traffic moving without congestion ? Well i never...

The M25 is indeed now hateful at any hour of the day.
Not sure that's necessarily the case.

Rush hour it's terrible, especially around Heathrow and the Dartford Crossing.

Late evenings it clears up rather nicely and a good turn of pace can be had.

What I have noticed it the deterioration of the M25 over the weekends. At least rush hour drivers are assertive and get on with it. Weekends bring out the people (usually middle aged women) who drive once a week on the motorway to visit some aunt or grandparent (rest of the week found doing 40 in their local NSL). They will be found bimbling along at 60mph in lane 3 (of 4) causing calamity/congestion behind them.

The other major issue I've noticed is the rise of the econo--driver. These bells sit in Lane 1 at 50mph causing trucks to overtake them leading to further congestion as traffic in Lane 2 then slows down to 55mph and then everyone tries to move to lane 3. If you're too poor to travel >55mph on the motorway in a car, thus requiring trucks to overtake you, fk off and get on the train.

The only logical solution is to steadily increase tax on fuel to price enough people off the road!!!
Why not just stop using the roads voluntarily instead of waiting for tax increases?

Or is it that you want me taken off the road but to continue to use the roads yourself?
Obviously, turkey's don't vote for Christmas. wink

But on a serious note there is no other efficient means to reduce road traffic than using pricing. It's what we all respond to. Just look how many people will spend tens of thousands on a new car to get a reduction in VED of a few hundred quid. The pricing doesn't even have to work or be logical to actually work.

So whether it is increasing existing taxation systems or introducing new ones like pay per mile black boxes etc these are the only methods that would reduce congestion.

I wouldn't panic though as it can't happen as the least able to pay are the typically the largest voting demographic as well as key workers.

A more logical system would be to ration fuel. In other words every driver gets an annual allowance that is sufficient for normal use and after that allowance then their cost per litre goes to some ridiculous price. Allow a trade in credits through a centralised system to limit black markets etc.

Only another couple of months and the booths will be gone, you'll still be paying but not having to stop so there won't be any congestion at all...............in your dreams.

Instead of dicking around for decades with 3 and then 4 lanes, they should have just blown 8 each way and be done with it. What they could do now is use the hard shoulder during rushour particularly around the M3 and Heathrow.

I returned from a few days fishing on the Norfolk Broads today and would normally have hit the M25/M11 at around 12.00 to travel round through Dartford tunnel to Kent. I had, however, planned to have lunch with a freind in Loughton, so used just 1 junctions worth of the "road to hell" which was OK albeit clogged with road works.

At 3.30 set off on the home leg and decided to use Blackwall. It was a bit worse than usual but not too bad. 2 hours from Loughton and I was arriving home so about 10 minutes more than normal. So glad I decided on Blackwall as every 6 minutes the radio was full of traffic reports from all over the country with tales of woe.

As for sorting the M25, how about the following:

1). All trucks can only use the nearside lane, however many lanes there are. Same should happen on any dual carriageway road.

2). Close all junctions that aren't arteiral routes. Could be just M roads. That way there would be no short journies and the road would be used for what is was intended for. To circunavigate the capital.

Let me outsmug you. Here in Cumbria it is 28c, and severe traffic congestion is a tractor, a lost tourist dragging a shed and 4 bicycles on a variety of racks an a pensioner looking for sheep. Took 6 minutes to get home, but I wasted 22 secs putting the roof downsmile
Hmm, on the one hand I have less traffic than that. On the other I'm in a rented 500L. On balance I'll have to give you that one smile

You were very lucky, the Blackwall tunnel was closed for quite a while from around 4.30pm I think, there are still long queues.

I just set the Sat Nav to 'avoid motorways' and have a great time.

Having a 5 minute walk to work instead of a 1hour B-road schlep has genuinely changed my life.

You've summed up DJRC nicely there!

I've not been around for long but it's pretty clear there are some who, even if they can't walk on water, certainly believe that they can! biggrin

Same here. I can't understand how someone can accept spending 10 hours a week commuting. But I got seriously mocked for my opinion on this.

Still 8 minutes to go to work this morning now that the schools have broken up...instead of 11...

I'd rather not work than commute, but not always practical of course!

You're right, I don't get it either. I've pretty much vowed to never commute over 30 minutes.

I now ENJOY driving again. I only ever drive when I'm going somewhere fun or just simply driving for fun.

I can beat your 8 minutes - my walk took me 6 minutes door-to-desk this morning....
