Hi all,

A friend of mine seems to think they have a quote from NHS Fleet Solutions (company lease scheme) for a new Fiesta at £70 a month. When I queried how cheap this is (£70 a month surely doesn't even cover depreciate, let alone the insurance, servicing and maintenance that is thrown in with this deal!) his response was 'it's because I'll be doing so many business miles, around 12,000 a year.'

So NHS Fleet Solutions are able to knock out Fiestas, including insurance and all maintenance, for 70 x 3 years of payments = £2,520, because the user is doing quite a lot, rather than relatively few, miles? Surely if this deal was real, without any huge hidden catch, everyone in health would be doing it, me included?

Does that sound genuine to people who understand leases or is the individual involved talking ... guff? And the final irony is he said he had a long soul searching debate with the missus about whether £70 for a new month was a good deal?

Has to be a catch somewhere along the line.

Ask anyone on here that does driving in sales and they'll tell you that 12,000 miles is absolutely nothing when it comes to business mileage.

I know they did the Ka at about £120 a few years back as a colleague had one. In my experience they can have a stupidly low rate for a one off car that they have had knocking around for a while or if someone has had to end their term early for whatever reason but I doubt that a brand spanking new Fiesta would be that cheap!

It's no deposit - I know someone else who was in this scheme and they were paying nearly £200 a month for a Fiesta with no deposit, yet according to this person it's now £70 a month? Something doesn't tally.

could well be right, my dad said he'd seen a personal lease deal on a zetec s for £140/month with £700 down. so if nhs can procure a huge ammount of them it doesn't sound too far fetched to me

Perhaps that's the cost to the end user, on top of a contribution from the employer to the running cost (i.e. a company car scheme)?

That or there's a hefty deposit paid at the start.

On the face of it I have a top of the range Passat for £110 a month. Only my employer pays the other £350ish per month to the leasing company, and insurance on top of that.

No way is it possible to have any kind of new car for £70 a month all in.

Perhaps it's a company car and they're getting the BIK tax confused with a lease rate.

I wouldn't have thought a Fiesta would rack up that much BIK; a 2.2d Civic was between £50-55/month, and an eco-friendly 1.6d Leon was £40ish.

If you are a higher rate tax payer than it is - though a fiesta wouldn't normally be a choice to go for if you are. 40% bracket BMW 320d/Audi's Merc 250cdis would be the type of car not a base spec fiesta. If he has open to downgrade and get cash back good for him.

As others have said this does sound too good to be true it undercuts Mobility rates for Fiestas by about two thirds. Mobility schemes acquire a huge number of cars each year and Fiestas are a main line item. It cannot therefore be genuine unless there are hidden charges or deposits not disclosed as yet.

NHS car rentals as a firm do seem to be pretty well ok so it is up to the OP to ask the relevant questions and hopefully bring chapter and verse. At thse prices these cars would fly out so as yet, I must await more definitive information please.

It's a public sector company scheme. If it's similar to the part of government I work for it's a company car with contribution for private use. The employer also pays a contribution for the business use.
You also get hit on tax as any other company car.
Benefit to the employer is they save as you get a very much reduced mileage rate ~ 11p a mile if I remember correctly.

We're paying the balance for him through our taxes?

Just a thought.

I'm probably wrong though, the NHS is pretty strapped for cash thes e days.

Although I may be wrong about that too.

Polo for £199 per month. I assume the Fiesta is similar (but cheaper).

Please note example price per month is based upon a member of staff earning £25,000 p.a, working 37.5 hours per week, a member of their employer's pension scheme and using salary sacrifice to pay for the lease car.

The quote is based on a contract lease of 8,000 miles p.a. and comes with fully comprehensive insurance for social, domestic and pleasure purposes and for business use of your employing organisation only. The car has a full maintenance package covering all servicing and reasonable tyre replacement and includes road tax and breakdown cover.

The contract is for 3 years, terms and conditions apply, please refer to your employing organisation's policy documentation for further information. Individual quotations may vary from the advertised rate, depending on your annual mileage, salary, pension and tax status.
Contact NHS Fleet Solutions for further information.
Insurance + tax + breakdown cover and even 'reasonable' tyre replacement!

Perhaps I should ditch my 328 and look into this!
